Dear Parents

I would like to thank the many parents who attended High School Open House 2010 last Tuesday evening. We had a
very good turn out from parents and I believe this bodes very well for our continued partnership with respect to the
education of your child. I hope you were all as equally proud, as we were, of our Art Students and of the
collaborative effort between the Jazz Band and the Show Choir. We are going to have some fun with the lifting
stage in the years to come that is plain to see!

In my opening speech last Tuesday I mentioned the work we have been doing on ‘reconstructing” our curriculum. I
specifically mentioned six “pillars” that we have rested the new structure on:
 A clear and constant focus on the long term mission of ISM.
 A curriculum and assessment framework that honors the overall mission as well as explicit goals of
external academic programs.
 A set of explicit principles of learning and instructional design, based on research.
 Practices consistent with the mission and the key learning principles.
 An overall strategy of reform centered on feedback and adjustment that is ongoing timely and robust
enough to enable all teachers and students to change course en route, as needed, to achieve the desired
results.
 A set of tactics for orchestrating the work of schooling, working “backward” from the mission and desired
results.
(Wiggins and McTighe, Schooling by Design, 2007)

At ISM we have adopted a common language and a common approach to curriculum writing across the entire school.
This approach called Understanding by Design places squarely at the center of learning the acquisition of deep
understanding and transfer of knowledge, guided by essential questions.

Aligned with these ‘six pillars” the HS division has identified the following priorities for this year:
 Transfer of curriculum to the Atlas Rubicon database management system.
 Continuing to embed the UbD process in our unit writing, particularly within the development of the
learning sequence in stage 3 of the UbD process.
 Continue our looking for learning protocols, that focus on administrators and program leaders visiting
teachers classes to check for strong and consistent student learning.
 To implement, develop and monitor the ISM online Word Press Blog as an emergency educational tool and
as an excellent communication and crutch to support classroom learning.
 To continue to implement the ISM Assessment policy, specifically as it relates to the new curriculum
framework.

With these priorities in mind ISM will be conducting faculty in-service training next Thursday, September 9th.
Next Tuesday, September 7th the PTA will have their annual Bearcat Welcome. In the week starting Monday
September 12th we have the Freedom from Chemical Dependency (FCD) Counselors working specifically with our
grade 9 students. There will be a combined MS and HS Parent Coffee on Tuesday, September 14th at 9:30pm in the
Little Theater, to hear more about how you can support your child in the very important area of drug and alcohol
education. As a parent this is a meeting not to miss. As a special inducement to attend this meeting, the fabulous
ISM Dance Company will perform publically for the first time this year!

This week we had the launch of our HS club program with Club Expo. Many students signed up for clubs, councils
and activities that they had an interest in. It is important however that students do not overload their schedule and
that when they do sign up for a club; they in fact turn up and follow through on their commitment to that
organization.

While talking about commitment, tomorrow Saturday we will have our entire senior IB Diploma batch” working from
9-5pm on their Extended Essays, ably supported by teachers volunteering their weekend time. This is a crucial
component of the IB Diploma and I want to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of the students, the teachers
and of Ms. Sandy van Nooten, the IB Coordinator!

Kind regards,

William R. S Brown Michael Dickinson

FROM THE PTA OFFICE:

FROM THE CLINIC:

IMPORTANT: As there seems to be a considerable number of children and adults around with cold and flu like symptoms
at the moment, it may be a good time to remind all parents not to send their children to school if they are unwell and
particularly if they have a fever.  Anyone who has been suffering with a fever should be fever free and symptom free,
without medication, for 24 hours before returning to school.

Although we realize that parents are anxious not to disrupt the education of their children, we would like to stop the
circulation of these illnesses through the school community.  If sick children continue to come to school, their classmates
and teachers will soon become infected and there will be further impact on the teaching and learning taking place in our
school.

Please help us to protect all of the children, staff and faculty by keeping children who are not well at home or taking
them to visit their own doctor.  We hope you understand and support us in our mission to keep the school community as
fit and healthy as possible so that they may benefit from every learning opportunity the school can offer.

Talk by Carlos Celdran, with an introduction to Teodulo Protomartir by Uro dela Cruz

Little known to the general public, Teodulo Protomartir is considered as the Father of Philippine photography, and
credited with bringing the 35 mm format to the country. He captured Manila in ruins from the Second World War, its
battle wounds, and its restoration. He caught post-war Manila with Filipinos going about their daily business in familiar
places like Intramuros, Luneta, Ermita and Quiapo. He took shots as well of buildings and bridges that are no more.
Protomartir was there in 1946 when the Americans gave the Philippines its independence. On July 4, he witnessed the
birth of the Philippine Republic: for the first time the Philippine flag flew proudly alone. Filipino crowds cheered, planes
flew overhead, floats passed in parade. Protomartir caught it all on still camera. Beyond their importance as historical
evidence, Protomartir's images are cultural treasures that are part and parcel of the Filipino's identity and collective
memory. TV director and photographer Uro de la Cruz will give an introduction to Teodulo Protomartir and tell the
interesting story of how he serendipitously came across his photographs. And in his inimitable way, Carlos Celdran,
celebrated tour guide and authority on Manila's history, will bridge the decades with a talk illustrated with pictures of the
places Protomartir
photographed in 1946 as they are today in 2010.
