PROJECT: BASIC COMPUTER LITERACY PROGRAM FOR TEACHERS
(BCLPT)
II. DESCRIPTION :
Basic Computer Literacy Program for Teachers (BCLPT) is an approach to equip the
teachers of Santa Barbara National Comprehensive High School with the basic skills in data
encoding, manipulation and application of computer programs and software in implementing
computer-assisted instruction across all subjects in the Senior High School.
III. RATIONALE:
The guidelines for the proper implementation of curriculum in the Philippines clearly stated
that the use of Information and Communication Technology in instruction will help develop
learners to be empowered in a fast changing society. This directive of the department mandated all
the public secondary schools in the country to use learning equipment and materials which includes
computer programs that are educational, interactive and experiential.
Studies showed that the use of computers and educational software in teaching has a
significant impact in pupils’ learning outcomes (Fritz, 2009). Students were highly motivated and
focused in any lesson which involves manipulation of computers and teachers act as facilitators of
learning rather than talking all throughout the lesson.
THE SITUATION
Currently, 7 out of 17 teachers of the Santa Barbara National Comprehensive High School
have background in basic data encoding and computer operation. Of the 17 intermediate teachers
who handle Senior High School classes, 7 do not have any background on computing grades using
excel and doing learning materials using Microsoft word and as well as doing simple
troubleshooting techniques using the computer.
THE SOLUTION
The BCLPT which was included in the Computer-Assisted Instruction Program
(CAIP) of the school will train teachers the fundamentals of computer operations and provide
prior skills in integrating computer manipulations in teaching.
