Attacking Tips

Tip #1 - Conserve Your Energy and Stay Fit

77 FIFA 10 Tips - 3rd Edition Copyright © 2010. All Rights Reserved. www.FIFtips.com
Each player in FIFA 10 has a fitness bar next to his name. When the player sprints, his

fitness decreases until he stops sprinting and rests. Don’t hold down the sprint button the

entire game. Your player will become tired quicker. Use sprinting sparingly. Only sprint

when entering open space or if you have a step on your opponent.

Tip #2 - Use Radar to Earn Breakaways

Radar is your friend. Use it to locate your teammates and identify where the defense is

on the field. If you play with the TELE camera view, then you can only see a partial

amount of the entire pitch. Radar can help you earn breakaways if you pay close

attention to how your opponent moves. Radar is activated in Game Settings. It should

appear in the left side of your screen.

Tip #3 - Watch the Linesman to Prevent Offsides

Pay attention to the linesman when sending your forwards into space. I have lost many

great scoring chances because I failed to glance at the lineman before passing the ball

into space. If your forward is offside, the linesman will hold his flag up. Bring your

player back onside and the linesman lowers his flag. This will help you play onside

better and bury those great scoring opportunities.

77 FIFA 10 Tips - 3rd Edition Copyright © 2010. All Rights Reserved. www.FIFtips.com
Tip#5 - Use Speedy Players to Wreak Havoc

EA sports has blessed certain players like C. Ronaldo, Samuel Eto, and Fernando Torres

with blazing pace. Use their high attributes to create some simple scoring opportunities.

When you see open space with exceptionally fast players, simply turn and go. Note:

Only turn and go with speedy players. Slower players will get caught and dispossessed.

Tip # 6 - Bring Your Goalie Up for Corner Kicks

When you're losing in the final minutes of the game, you can bring up your goalie for

corner kicks to add an extra man for the set piece. Set your In-Game tactics to Ultra

Offensive, and your goalie will rush up to join in on the action during your next corner

kick. Note: This only occurs during the final 3-5 minutes of the match, and you must be

losing.

Tip #7 – Use Box Overload to Outnumber Your Opponent

Box Overload will bring most of your midfielders and attackers towards the opponent’s

goal – right on the front line of the penalty box. If you are confident and your defense

77 FIFA 10 Tips - 3rd Edition Copyright © 2010. All Rights Reserved. www.FIFtips.com
can cope with counter attacks – it may be a good tactic to employ. However, scoring

long shots can be difficult because the defense “tightens-up” in the penalty box as well.

Luckily, you can expect multiple shots from rebounds if you use the box overload tactic

correctly. Switch your Offensive Tactics to Box Overload to utilize this strategy.

Tip #8 – Score Easy Goals Using the Counter Attack

A well-planned counter attack will make your forwards run towards the opponent’s goal

immediately when you have the control of the ball. This is very useful if you have quick

forwards and like to use long passes to catch the opponent’s defense off-guard. Switch

your offensive strategy to counter attack so you can catch your opponent sleeping when

you go from defense to offense.

Tip #9 – Choosing the Best Camera View

The right camera angle is very important because it allows you to see the entire pitch. I

recommend the classic TELE camera view with 100% zoom and 100% height. This will

allow you to see the entire field better, and you can see your opponent's players coming

at you. Otherwise, you will have blind spots and miss golden opportunities to put your

players in wonderful scoring positions.

77 FIFA 10 Tips - 3rd Edition Copyright © 2010. All Rights Reserved. www.FIFtips.com
Tip #10 – Always Attack, Never Give Up

There will be games when you are losing 2 to 1 or 3 to 1 with 30 FIFA minutes left in

the game. This is where you must be mentally confident and focused. I have scored 3

goals in 5 FIFA minutes before so no game is over until the final whistle blows.

Stay confident and keep pressuring your opponent's defense. Your opponent is at their

weakest point RIGHT AFTER they score a goal. This is when you pour on the shots and

make your opponent sweat.

Tip #11 - Experiment with Different Attacking Formations

Most people play with the standard 4-4-2 formation; however, there are many other

useful formations depending on your skill level, attacking/defending skill, and the score

of the match.

Great Attacking Formations for scoring goals:

• 3-5-2

• 4-2-2-2

77 FIFA 10 Tips - 3rd Edition Copyright © 2010. All Rights Reserved. www.FIFtips.com
• 4-3-3

• 4-1-2-1-2

• 3-4-3

Tip #12 – Use Skill Combinations to Beat Defenders

I like to practice my combos in the Arena area (where it's 1 vs. 1 against the keeper).

Sometimes you can make a good combo using the simple stop ball + a simple stepover

or pullback.

The key to beating defenders is UNPREDICTABILITY. Mix up your combos, change

your pace, dribble with different feet, etc. to keep your opponent guessing.

Tip #13 - Practice Holding Up the Ball with Your Strikers

Whenever you pass to your forwards, does it never reach them, or if it gets to them and

they do collect it, does the defender takes it from you before you have a chance to do

anything? Try practicing holding up the ball when passing to your forwards. This will

draw out the defenders, and create gaps for your midfielders and other striker to run

through. Hold up the ball by coming to the ball and dribbling away from your

77 FIFA 10 Tips - 3rd Edition Copyright © 2010. All Rights Reserved. www.FIFtips.com
opponent's goal with the control stick.

Tip #14 - Use an Effective Trap to Control the Ball

Good trapping skills will give you much better control over the ball. This is important if

the ball bounces off your foot and you lose possession often.

Tip #15 - Use Cancel trap to Redirect Forward Runs

Cancel Trap is a very effective way to take a player off his default run and redirect him

to intercept a pass. This function allows you to cancel out of the run and cut in front of

the opponent to collect the ball before he intercepts it. You can also use it to cancel a

shot attempt or cross as long as you hit the buttons before the shooting animation starts.

One of the best places for employing the Cancel Trap move is when you're attacking

down the wings.

Tip #16 - Push the Ball Into Open Space with the Knock On Function

The Knock on is very simple but also very effective. It gives you just enough advantage

that makes a big difference in your ability to maintain possession. When moving with

77 FIFA 10 Tips - 3rd Edition Copyright © 2010. All Rights Reserved. www.FIFtips.com
the ball, instead of just using the default dribble (which can be easily read by your

opponent), be creative and knock the ball in a direction and then change your player's

pace and move quickly in that direction. It is very tough for a player to get back in front

of you once you have moved beyond them. Use this to set yourself up for other things

like transitioning into a big shot (or fake shot).

Tip#17- Use the Wall Pass aka 1-2 Pass

The wall pass is a basic skill where you pass the ball to your player, move into space,

then pass the ball back to the original player (aka 1-2 pass). This works very well when

you have 2 strikers against 4 defenders and can’t get past them.

Pass the ball from 1 striker to the other. This will send the striker on the run before he is

offside, through pass back (like a 1-2 pass). If you are fast enough, you will beat the

defender and be 1 vs. 1 with the goalie.

77 FIFA 10 Tips - 3rd Edition Copyright © 2010. All Rights Reserved. www.FIFtips.com
Shooting Tips

Tip #18 - Slow Down Before Shooting

If you find a lot of your shots are going over the bar, slow down before you shoot. Let

go of sprint before shooting to settle your player and then have a shot on goal.

Tip #19 - How to Beat the Goalkeeper 1 vs. 1

When you’re one-on-one with the keeper, try a finesse shot to curl the ball around the

keeper. Press Shoot + Finesse to take a finesse shot.

Tip #20- How to Chip the Goalie on a Breakaways

77 FIFA 10 Tips - 3rd Edition Copyright © 2010. All Rights Reserved. www.FIFtips.com
When the goalie comes out of the net on a breakaway, hit LB/L1 + Shoot to chip the ball

over the keeper's head. Don't press too hard or you will sail the ball over the goal.

Tip #21 - How to Score Goals from the Kickoff

Many people use this scoring trick from the kickoff to score instant goals. The way to

execute it is to power-up the shot immediately after kickoff and move the striker slightly

to the side to release the shot. With practice, one can adjust the power of the shot by

actually lobbing the keeper as well.

Tip #22 – Use the Double Tap to Keep Your Shots Hard and Low

There seems to be a pretty sophisticated engine in place when you tap one of the buttons

twice in quick succession. If you hit the shoot button twice quickly, you will get a faster

release on the shot and the shot will stay lower to the ground while still maintaining a

high velocity. To generate greater lift, hold the button down slightly longer on the

second tap. Additionally, you can use this when a ball is in the air to make

your player perform a volley or bike.

77 FIFA 10 Tips - 3rd Edition Copyright © 2010. All Rights Reserved. www.FIFtips.com
Tip #23 – Use a Fake Shot to Create More Space for an Easier Shot

Sometimes you will attempt to shoot, but the defense will tackle the ball away before

you let off a screamer. An easy way to create more space is to use the fake shoot move.

Hold down Shoot then Press Pass quickly before the shot bar fills up to initiate a fake

shot. You can fool the defender or goalkeeper, and create a ton more space for your

shooting lanes.

Tip #24 – Score Goals from Long Distance Using the Power Shot

If you want to score goals from long distance, then I recommend taking long shots with

highly skilled players. Players such as C. Ronaldo, Kaka, Messi, and others will give

you a greater chance at scoring a goal from long distance. When shooting, let the bar fill

up half way and shoot for the corners. Otherwise, the goalkeeper will catch the ball or it

will sail over the bar.

77 FIFA 10 Tips - 3rd Edition Copyright © 2010. All Rights Reserved. www.FIFtips.com
Passing Tips

Tip #24 - Short Passing is the key to dominating your opponent

The short pass is a successful method that really makes this sport beautiful. When a

teammate is in front of your player it is extremely accurate, and as the player moves

around your periphery the accuracy drops. Try to adjust your player's body position to

give him the most accurate attempt to be successful.

Tip #25 - How to Find Open Teammates with Long passes:

The long pass can turn a minor attacking threat into a goal scoring opportunity in the

blink of an eye. Having your players make great runs off the ball is the key. Watch the

radar for that target player heading to open space, and then judge the power you strike

77 FIFA 10 Tips - 3rd Edition Copyright © 2010. All Rights Reserved. www.FIFtips.com
the ball with carefully: too hard and it's an easy ball for the keeper, too light and you

might find yourself defending a quick counter attack. Use this when you want to open up

the play. The amount of time you hold down the pass button will determine the length of

the pass. For best results, make sure you attempt to lead your player and not fire the pass

at him. Allowing him to run onto the pass in stride could give him all the distance he

needs to get a chance on goal.

Tip 26 - Create Breakaways with the through pass

This is one of the most deadly weapons in the game when done correctly. The key to

being successful is your ability to look beyond your player to the space your teammates

can hit quickly. This pass is used to get a player threaded through the defense and in on

goal. Once again, how long you hold the pass button will determine the strength and

distance of your pass. Be sure to play the ball to the space ahead of your player and let

him run onto it. Some high-rated players can also perform a swerving through ball that's

tough for a defender to judge.

Tip #27 - Beat Your Opponent over the head with a Lobbed Pass

The lobbed through pass forces your opponent to think three dimensionally. This is a

very effective tool on an attack or counter attack when used to completely switch fields

to the opposite side. Use this pass to hit a teammate who is making a diagonal run, as it

77 FIFA 10 Tips - 3rd Edition Copyright © 2010. All Rights Reserved. www.FIFtips.com
can provide you with some great opportunities to get in on your opponent's goal.

Crossing Tips

Tip# 28 – How to Score Diving Header Goals from Crosses

The diving header goal requires 3 key components:

• an accurate cross into the box

• dangerous run from the forward into the area

• an accurate header on goal and away from the goalkeeper

First, use your midfielder (left or right) to attack down your opponent's sideline. Use

radar and pay attention to where your forward is running because this will decide how

much power you use on the cross. Next, fill up the power bar 1/3 for a near post run, ½

for a middle of the 16 yard box run, and ¾ for a far post run. Make sure the ball curves

77 FIFA 10 Tips - 3rd Edition Copyright © 2010. All Rights Reserved. www.FIFtips.com
away from the goalkeeper, or he will either catch or punch the ball out of the box.

As the ball curves in, use the jostle button to fend off your opponent. This will give you

the best position to head the ball on goal. Finally, hold down with the control pad and fill

up the power bar no more than ½ way when heading the ball on goal. Remember,

accuracy is more important than power here. An accurate header will guarantee a goal or

a rebound while a powerful header may sail right over the cross bar.

Tip # 29 – Use the Low Cross Sparingly

Back in FIFA 2008, I used the low cross to score lots of goals. Now in FIFA 2010, EA

sports gave the low driven cross much less effectiveness, which is why I recommend

crossing in the air much more than the low cross. Usually, a low cross will completely

miss your strikers and either end up going out of bounds for a goal kick, or to the

opposite sideline.

Tip #30 – The Key to Crossing is Timing

The biggest tip I can give you is learn how to time your runs before crossing. You must

use your radar in conjunction with the position of your players in the gameplay screen to

become better at crossing.

77 FIFA 10 Tips - 3rd Edition Copyright © 2010. All Rights Reserved. www.FIFtips.com
Defending Tips

Tip #31 - Use Midfielders for Aggressive Tackling

Hard tackles are not that hard to pull off. It’s just like shooting. If you get the timing and

direction right, you got it. Mostly you perform a hard tackle in two occasions (a) you’re

very confident that you’ll nick the ball (b) you’re fed up with your opponents running

around or skills moves. If you want to tackle hard, just for a moment see if that’s a

midfielder, defender or a forward. Try your hardest to avoid hard tackling with a

defender. Use the midfielders to do this dirty job.

Tip #32 - Block Passing Lines with the Slide Tackle

When you anticipate your opponent playing a thorough ball or making a dangerous pass,

77 FIFA 10 Tips - 3rd Edition Copyright © 2010. All Rights Reserved. www.FIFtips.com
press slide tackle to get into the passing lanes and block the ball. This is great for

preventing breakaways, 1 vs. 1 with your goalie, or simply stopping a counter attack.

Tip #33 - Anticipate Passing by Reading the Passing Lanes

Study the game and the opponent as you play. Anticipate. Look for the passing lanes. As

in, just try to guess what would be his next probable move. Ask yourself these questions:

• Where could he pass?

• Do I have someone covered there?

• Can I intercept that pass?

That’s the name of the game in defending. If you have difficulty in reading the passing

lane, just watch an AI vs. AI match. In exhibition mode, you can set the controller

symbol right in the middle (not on either team) and that would bring up an AI vs. AI

match. While you’re watching, constantly try to guess where AI will pass, shoot, and

dribble .

Tip #34- Apply Pressing to Win the Ball

Pressing will position your defenders very close to the opponent’s forwards/midfielders.

77 FIFA 10 Tips - 3rd Edition Copyright © 2010. All Rights Reserved. www.FIFtips.com
This may lead to more pass interceptions – but beware, when strikers have good control

of the ball they can beat you on receiving – and have a clear path to goal.

Tip #35 - Use the Offside Trap to Stop Counter Attacks

A famous tactic invented in the start of the century - will bring your defense forward

slightly before the pass is made by the opponent’s offense. You can catch your opponent

moving too quickly, which will kill his attack as long as the linesman makes the correct

call.

Tip #36 - Maintain a Flat back when playing defense

Holding a flat line is key to stopping the attack from moving through your defensive

third. As long as your line moves together, you can react much better to through balls

and double team the opposing team's strikers.

Tip #37 - Don't Chase, Cut Down Angles When Beating on Defense

Never chase the player with the ball after he beats you 1 vs. 1; always try to run at an

angle back to your goal. Don't chase the attacker because he will always win the foot

77 FIFA 10 Tips - 3rd Edition Copyright © 2010. All Rights Reserved. www.FIFtips.com
race.

If your last defender (RB or LB) gets beat on the wing, don't chase the attacker; make

sure that you run back to your goal at an angle. Eventually you will run into him again

and this time you will have support and win the ball. (Remember to use your walk

button and call 2nd defender features,)

Tip #38 - How to Defend against Crosses

There is a trick to always win the ball or at least make it harder for attackers to win the

ball in the 18 yard box. When your opponent crosses the ball, hold the pace control

button. This will make the defender face in the direction that the ball is crossed. Just

make sure you head the ball back in the same direction it was crossed. If you try to head

the ball the opposite way, your defender might have a bad angle or position to win the

ball.

Tip #39 - Always Switch Players Manually

If you allow the CPU to switch automatically, you will be disappointed when the CPU

switches to the wrong player and your opponent is streaking down your midfield. I

77 FIFA 10 Tips - 3rd Edition Copyright © 2010. All Rights Reserved. www.FIFtips.com
recommend you change your player switch to 0% CPU, so you will have full control of

your defenders. You can switch your CPU auto switching to 0% manual by going into

your wireless controller settings.

Tip #40 - Only Sprint to Recover, Not When Tackling

The more you sprint, the less control of you player you will have. Only sprint if you are

100% sure that you will win the ball. If you sprint without thinking, it will be easy for

the attacker to make his move as he goes 1 vs. 1 against your keeper.

Its better when you sprint to get closer to the attacker then release the sprint button then

square off your defender facing the ball and call your 2nd defender for help. (See Square

Your Defender help)

Tip #41 - Stealing the Ball without Committing a Foul

People always wonder why they keep fouling the player with the ball. If you hold down

the press button for too long, you will crash into the defender and commit a foul. You

need to apply the 2x Tap button rule when you are trying to steal the ball from the

attacker. Simply press the steal button simultaneously (tap, tap, tap), so your defenders

77 FIFA 10 Tips - 3rd Edition Copyright © 2010. All Rights Reserved. www.FIFtips.com
avoid committing silly fouls.

Tip #42 - Don't Dive In, Tackle with Intelligence

Many players rush the attacker and dive in, which makes it very easy for your opponent

to pass around you or simply beat you off the dribble. Don't dive in. Instead, anticipate

by tackling when your opponent tries to turn, takes a long touch, or is not expecting your

aggressive pressure.

Tip #43 - Wait for Defensive Support

When you are 1 vs. 1 against the attacker and the last defender back, don't put pressure

right. If the attacker beats you, he will be 1 vs. 1 against the keeper for a breakaway.

Wait for support, jockey by holding the back + the faceup button before attempting to

win the ball.

Tip #44 - Call a 2nd Defender to Increase Your Chances of Winning the Ball

One of the most powerful defensive tactics is calling a 2nd defender. This feature allows

you to signal a 2nd defender who is nearest to the ball to put pressure or mark the

77 FIFA 10 Tips - 3rd Edition Copyright © 2010. All Rights Reserved. www.FIFtips.com
attacker with the ball by holding the shoot button while on defense. The cool thing about

this feature is that you can be in control of a defender while you tell the 2nd defender to

pressure the ball It is great for double teaming an attacker.

Use this feature wisely! Otherwise you will create holes in your defense, leaving your

defenders out of position if you fail to win the ball.

Tip #45 - Use Jockeying to Block Passes and Stop Your Opponent

Jockeying allows you to mark your opponent without initiating a tackle and risk getting

beat on the play. Some may think that jockeying lacks the aggression to win the ball

quickly from your opponent. This concept is untrue because the jockeying player will

perform a standing tackle to win the ball. If your opponent tries to pass through or sprint

pass your jockeying player, your player will automatically execute an effective standing

tackle while holding his position strongly.

Use this highly neglected defensive move to intercept more passes while preventing

your opponent from sprinting straight down your defensive half.

Tip #46 – Drop Your Defensive Line and Maintain Your Shape

77 FIFA 10 Tips - 3rd Edition Copyright © 2010. All Rights Reserved. www.FIFtips.com
A useful tactic for allowing fewer goals is to drop back your defensive line when the

opponent's striker has the ball. If your opponent plays the ball to the striker's feet, retreat

backwards to give your teammates more time to recover. If you try to win the

ball and get beat, you may give up a breakaway.

Goalkeeping Tips

Tip #47 - Charging with the Keeper to Prevent Shots

Charging with the keeper can work very well to stop your opponent's attack. You must

77 FIFA 10 Tips - 3rd Edition Copyright © 2010. All Rights Reserved. www.FIFtips.com
also remember to time the attacker's runs. This is a great way to intercept the ball.

Simply hold down the charge button to sprint out with your keeper. If you charge inside

the box, your keeper will try to block the ball with his hands. If you charge outside of

the box, your goalkeeper will avoid using his hands and slide tackle inside.

Tip #48 - Fake Charge with the Keeper to Prevent Chip Shots

When you press the keeper charge button, this will make your opponent think that you

pulled your keeper out and he will try to go for the easy chip shot. A counter to your

opponent's chip shot is to quickly release the keeper rush button again, thus making your

keeper track back to fool the attacker.

Tip #49 – Change Your Mentality to Defensive to Prevent Counter Attacks

One problem you may have is your defense always seem to be half way up the field

when the opposite team attacks, but always in the right place for the other team when

you make a counter attack. Most likely, your opponent sets his mentality to Defensive or

Ultra Defensive. This keeps his midfielders and backline in better position for defending

when you win the ball. To change this option, push the control pad to the left once for

Defensive and twice for Ultra Defensive during gameplay.

77 FIFA 10 Tips - 3rd Edition Copyright © 2010. All Rights Reserved. www.FIFtips.com
Corner Kick Tips

Tip#50 - How to Defend Corner Kicks

Always keep a player by the semi circle when your keeper or your defender clears the

ball. If you do, you will have a player in the path of the incoming attacker, making it

harder for him to get a shot off.

Getting in front of the attacker to win the ball is important, so try to keep at least one

player at the penalty spot. Don't pull your keeper out to punt the ball unless you are

77 FIFA 10 Tips - 3rd Edition Copyright © 2010. All Rights Reserved. www.FIFtips.com
100% sure your goalkeeper can make it back quickly to make another save if necessary.

Tip #51 – How to Score from Corner Kicks

Scoring from a corner kick requires the following elements in successful order:

• Proper angling before taking the kick

• Right amount of power when sending the ball into the box

• Proper positioning by your attacker to fend off the defender

• Right amount of power and accuracy to score the goalkeeper

First off, customize your free kick takers in the Team Management menu and select the

best player for your set pieces. Each player has a free kick rating, just toggle through the

players and you will see the rating rise or fall depending on the kick taker.

Once you win a corner, use your control pad to aim the ball in your desired direction.

I've had the most success by aiming between the 6 yard box and 5 yards into the 18 yard

penalty box. This is close enough to score a goal, but far away from the keeper so he

cannot catch or punch the ball.

Use the jostle position button to hold off the defender, and press the header button just as

77 FIFA 10 Tips - 3rd Edition Copyright © 2010. All Rights Reserved. www.FIFtips.com
the ball swings into your player. Fill up the power bar no more than half way, or the ball

will sail over the goal. Lastly, aim away from the goalkeeper using the control pad.

Accuracy is more important than power because too much power usually misses the goal

completely. Accurate shots may get saved, but you have higher chance of scoring a

rebound while the goalkeeper is on the ground.

Free Kick Tips

77 FIFA 10 Tips - 3rd Edition Copyright © 2010. All Rights Reserved. www.FIFtips.com
Tip #52 – Practice Taking Free Kicks in the Arena

After you press start on the intro FIFA screen, you are taken to the arena where it's just

you and the goalkeeper. Press any direction on the control pad to initiate a free kick

situation. This is a great opportunity to practice taking free kicks from all different

angles.

Tip #53 – How to Score Over a Wall

You can add wicked curve to the ball by holding the control stick in certain directions

before taking the free kick.

• Control Stick Left – Sidespin

• Control Stick Right – Sidespin

• Control Stick Up – Top Spin

• Control Stick Down – Downspin

To score over a wall, the ball needs lots of top spin. This will cause the ball to rise and

dip very quickly after going over the wall. Make a curling shot by aiming to the far

corner, holding the control stick up, and then taking a regular shot. Again, practice in the

area to perfect your shot before taking your skills to the field.

Tip #54 - How to Score Free Kicks from Long Distance

Any free kick over 30 yards+ is considered long distance. Using the driven free kick will

77 FIFA 10 Tips - 3rd Edition Copyright © 2010. All Rights Reserved. www.FIFtips.com
produce the best results. Hold down driven free kick + shot to initiate a driven free kick.

Remember to aim to the farthest corner and fill up the power bar no more than ¾ full or

the ball will sail over the goal.

Team Formations

Tip #55 – 3-5-2 Formations

The 3-5-2 formation is a great strategy for teams with a highly skilled midfield and an

athletic back 3. In the 3-5-2, you transition from a flat back 4 to 2 marking backs and

free floating sweeper. This allows an extra midfielder to create a mismatch in the

midfield. Good 3-5-2 teams include Inter Milan, Spain National Team, and Liverpool.

Tip #56 – 4-2-2-2 Formations

77 FIFA 10 Tips - 3rd Edition Copyright © 2010. All Rights Reserved. www.FIFtips.com
The 4-2-2-2 is a good strategy for teams with highly skilled attacking midfielders and a

solid defensive backline. You can use a flat back 4, hold 2 defensive midfielders, push

up 2 attacking midfielders, and still maintain a basic 2 forward setup. Good 4-2-2-2

teams include Brazil national team, AC Milan, and FC Barcelona.

Tip #57 - 4-4-2 Customized

Very balanced formation it allows you to attack the wings for easy crosses, it is also

great for defending as you have two center defensive midfielders that track back to help

the defenders. Look at Spain’s default formation one player acts as the CDM while the

other acts as an attacking mid but he always tracks back to support the defenders.

Tip #58 – 4-1-2-1-2 Formation

Great formation for defensive mind players, it allows you to defend well but at the same

time support your strikers. It’s very important to always keep 4 players in the back and

with your CDM (center defensive Midfield) it makes it almost impossible to penetrate

through the middle. You also have a CAM (center attacking Midfield); this is a great link

between the midfields and the strikers.

Great Defensive Formations (When trying to keep a lead):

• 4-5-1

• 5-4-1

• 4-3-2-1

It's simple to change your formation in the Menu by pressing Start → Team Formations.

BAP TEAM PLAY TIPS

Tip #59 - How to Captain Your Team

First, select a custom game in the Online team play menu then leave all the field ANY

77 FIFA 10 Tips - 3rd Edition Copyright © 2010. All Rights Reserved. www.FIFtips.com
and hit search games. The first results in the search are usually the newest, so act fast

because they change in real-time. Usually one side will be open, so move over quickly

and if you're the first, you can select the team as well as kit color.

Tip #60 - Pay Attention to Your Kit Colors

Choose your team and a kit color that differs from your opponent. I once played Brazil

vs. Italy, and both teams had blue jerseys. It was hard to recognize my own teammates.

Tip #61 - Try Defensive Tactics to Counteract Poor Team Positioning

Next, your tactics are important. Be aware that your teammates will often play out of

position. I normally choose a more defensive formation to counter act this.

Tip #62 - How to Choose the Most Fun Position During Team Play

When you select your position, be quick because the forwards always go first. If you're

playing with 5 or less, choosing ANY can be better because you will control the ball

more often during the gameplay.

Tip #63 - Improve Your Team Defense by Assigning 1 Person to Defense

As for defense, playing it by yourself is MUCH easier than playing offense as separate

teammates. Use this to your advantage because often teammates don't have headsets.

Tip #64 - Use Through Balls Early and Often

Offensively, through balls work well during team play. Your forwards are more apt to

score breakaways on team play. It's something I've noticed and tried to exploit as often

as possible.

Tip #65 - Go Defensive to Secure the Win

If you're winning after halftime, change into a defensive formation to secure the win. If

losing, add an additional striker up top and apply more pressure to score the game tying

goal.

General Tips to Help You Improve Consistently

Tip #66 – Understand the Law of Diminishing Returns

The law of diminishing returns states that:

"The tendency for a continuing application of effort or skill toward a particular project

or goal to decline in effectiveness after a certain level of result has been achieved."

77 FIFA 10 Tips - 3rd Edition Copyright © 2010. All Rights Reserved. www.FIFtips.com
Basically, you should take a break after playing a number of FIFA games. I used to make

this mistake all the time, and caused me to lose multiple games when I would not accept

the fact.

Limit yourself to a certain number of games per session to maximize your talents.

Playing 20 games in a row is a surefire way to give your opponent the upper hand

because you are mentally exhausted.

Tip #67 – How to Capture Screenshots of Your Gameplay

You can take screenshots of an interesting photo by pausing the game, going to Instant

Replay, and tapping the Screenshot Button. Then Select Upload to send the screenshot to

the EAFootballWorld.com Servers.

Tip #68 – How to Find out Your Opponent's Skill Level

With every FIFA game you play, you receive skill points depending on your

performance. You can view you and your opponent's skill points by watching the

flashing indicator beneath the player name. On average, the more skill points your

opponent has, the better he is. This is a useful tool for estimating how difficult the match

77 FIFA 10 Tips - 3rd Edition Copyright © 2010. All Rights Reserved. www.FIFtips.com
will be.

Tip #69 – Always Pass and Move

A typical FIFA newbie move is to sprint with the ball as fast as possible and try to outrun

the opponent's defense. This is a common error, but can be fixed with efficient passing

and moving. Let the ball do the work, or else you can fatigue your squad and your

opponent will have the upper hand. Use 1-2 passes, short pass combinations, and keep

the ball moving to score much faster without fatiguing your entire squad through

constant sprinting.

Tip #70 – Read the Controls Guide

FIFA 10 is one of the most comprehensive soccer games ever because FIFA 10 contains

a wide array of controls. You must learn all the controls to fully enhance your FIFA

skills. Learn all the basic skills, combos, moves, controls, etc. This will give you a much

more comfortable feeling with the game, and comfort leads to confidence when playing

FIFA online. Here are the links to the Xbox 360, PS3, and Wii control guides.

Tip #71– Keep Shooting No Matter What

77 FIFA 10 Tips - 3rd Edition Copyright © 2010. All Rights Reserved. www.FIFtips.com
There is no such thing as the perfect shot in FIFA 10. You need to take any and every

shot you get. A telling sign is when a player records less than 5 shots in one match. Work

the goalkeeper, and don't be afraid to shoot from long distance.

Tip #72 – Stay the Course and Play on a Consistent Basis If You Want to Improve

The more you play FIFA 10, the better you become. Too often, gamers play a few

games, get frustrated, and then take out their frustration on the EA Sports forums. It will

take at least 20 games until you start seeing some results. Aim to play the best

competition until your skills improve.

Tip #73 - Ignore the Referees

If you ever played real life soccer before, then you know how difficult referees can be.

The same goes for FIFA 10. I try to ignore the referees as much as possible. Don't let bad

calls get the best of you.

Tip #74 - Improve Your Passing Skills to Win Games with Low Ranked Teams

77 FIFA 10 Tips - 3rd Edition Copyright © 2010. All Rights Reserved. www.FIFtips.com
The main difference between ½ teams and 5 stars team is the speed and skill of the

players. The only smart way to beat a 5 star team with a low ranked team is to master the

passing principles of FIFA 10. Focus on learning the best passing combinations, and you

can win games against much better teams by making the ball do most of the work. Refer

to the Attacking Tips section of this guide for more comprehensive passing tips.

Tip# 75 - How to Improve Your Lineup

Before you hit the READY button, you should go to team management and focus on two

main factors: lineup and formation. Your lineup is crucial because some of your best

players are currently on the bench by default in FIFA 2010. For example, Ronaldo de

Lima is on the bench for Corintanians by default. Use the player rating to determine the

optimal starting lineup. Every time you move a player to a different position, his rating

will change.

Tip #76 - How to Improve Your Formations

You are either a strong defensive player, strong offensive player, or both. Your lineup

should highlight your strengths, and avoid your weaknesses. If you score lots of goals,

77 FIFA 10 Tips - 3rd Edition Copyright © 2010. All Rights Reserved. www.FIFtips.com
use only 4 backs and add an attacking midfielder or two. If your strength is defense, try

adding a defensive midfielder or go with 5 in the back. If you are equally skilled, then

the 4-4-2 is the best default formation. It includes both an offensive and defensive

mentality all wrapped up in one.

Tip # 77 – Have Fun!

My biggest tip is to have fun and enjoy every minute of your FIFA experience. What

shocks me is so many people take FIFA to the extreme and send hateful messages, e-

mails, and notes for no reason. At the end of the day, you must enjoy your FIFA gaming

session, and realize that we are blessed to able to afford an Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, etc.

Many people around the world live without clean water, electricity, and the most basic

needs in life. I thank God everyday for giving me the opportunity to play FIFA 10,

launch the FIFtips.com website, write this ebook, and provide an awesome service to

you guys. Next time you play a game of FIFA 10, remember all the people who only

dream of owning a gaming system, and I am sure you will treat other fellow FIFA

gamers in a much different way.
