The design of straight joint fulfills the following functional

requirements.
Electrical Stress control
In a radial field (screened) cable, operating on AC system, the
distribution of voltage along the surface of insulation from the
conductor to screen terminating point is not uniform. This result in
occurrence of a high electrical stress at the point of termination of the
screen resulting in degradation of insulation at this point, eventually
leading to premature breakdown.
Occurrence of high electrical stress over ferrule area is eliminated by
filling stress grading mastic all around the ferrule and over the
exposed conductor.
Insulation Build-up
The insulation build up over the connector is achieved by means of
multiple layers of heat shrinkable tubes possessing high dielectric
strength and thermal stability. The number of insulation tubes are
predesigned to achieve an optimum thickness of insulation. This
precludes detrimental field variables related to jointing skill (such as
under application and eccentricity of build up insulation), hence the
system is by far, skill-independent.
Insulation Screen

Insulation screen over built up insulation is provided by means of a

heat shrinkable semi-conductive tube.

Armour and Screen Continuity

A flexible tinned copper wire mesh provides metallic screening over
each core. The wire mesh supplements the semiconducting screening
tube which is shrunk over built up insulation. In addition to this , a
copper braid, which is equivalent in electrical cross section area, to
the metal screen of each cable core, is provided to carry earth fault
currents. Armour continuity arrangement for XLPE cable is designed
to provide a permanent and low contact resistance bond. This limits
rise in temperature at bonding points even during flow of high earth
currents.
Mechanical Protection
Mechanical protection to the joint is provided by means of a metallic
case. The case has a high "impact resistance-to-weight" ratio.
Environmental Sealing and Corrosion Protection
Corrosion protection to the metal parts (case and armour) is provided
by means of heat shrinkable tubes coated internally with hot melt
adhesive for blocking entry of water into the joint. The tubes are
impact and corrosion resistant.
