MDT(Microsoft Deployment Toolkit)

CREATING CUSTOM PARTITION WITH
5 MDT 2013 STEP BY STEP GUIDE
In
previous chapter we deployed custom captured operating system with MDT in this chapter we ar
creating custom partition with MDT 2013, MDT is a great tool for deploying operating systems a
free we can deploy operating systems with software also and also we can capture and deploy cust
captured image with MDT but when we deploy operating system with MDT by default it create o
partition of whole hard disk in this post we learn how to create custom partitions by editing task
sequence in MDT 2013 after doing this we are able to deploy operating system with two or more
partitions for creating custom partition with MDT 2013 follow steps given below.
Creating Task Sequence
Open MDT deployment workbench create new task sequence or edit existing task sequence if hav
this example I am going to create new task sequence

Type your task sequence ID and name here then click next
Select standard client task sequence from template window then click next

Select operating system from OS selection window
Select do not specify key option or type key if you want you can also activate your window after
installation

Fill all required fields and click next to continue Specify admin password

Click Next
Click on finish

Creating custom partition with MDT 2013
Task
sequence is created now we have to modify this task sequence so we can create custom partition
with MDT 2013 to do this right click on task sequence select properties
Go to task sequence tab then go to Preinstall then New computer only then select Format and Part
disk

Delete this partition by clicking X botton at right side click on yes when asking for confirmation

Now we don’t have any partition on MDT task sequence

Now we have to create partition click on star like icon to create new partition
Type partition name
Partition type
Partition size
Select make this a boot partition for C drive

We have used 50% of our disk i have 60 GB HDD now i have 30 GB left

Again
click new to create new(Another) partition specify partition name and use a percentage of
remaining disk space(Select 100% if you want to use all remaining disk space it’s percentage of
remaining disk space)

Now we have two partitions when we deploy windows 7 operating system it automatically create
partitions 50% – 50%

Update Deployment Share
Right click on deployment share and select update deployment share to update deployment share

Click next

Click Next
When updated click on finish

Deploy Windows 7 with two partitions
Boot client machine from network via WDS server(See previous post’s on MDT)
You can directly run deployment wizard but if you want configure static IP click configure with s
address

Specify IP address and network settings then click on finish
Now run deployment wizard to install new operating system

Specify admin credentials

Select windows 7 task sequence
Fill computers details then click next

You can also create more than two partitions by editing task sequence

REFRESH OPERATING SYSTEM USING
6 MDT 2013
In this chapter we are going to learn how to re‐
install or refresh operating system using MDT 2013.
Normally when we reinstall operating system we take all user backups then install operating syste
then restore user backup In this post we are going to reinstall windows 7 operating system with au
backup and restore MDT can do all these things automatics for you It save lots of time on taking b
and restoring all backups. As I mentioned it many times in my other posts that MDT is a great fre
by Microsoft if we use it in correct way it can help us a lot and make system admin works easier t
time is money and if we use MDT in our day to day activity it definitely save our precious time th
7th post on MDT and I love to write on MDT hope you are also enjoy to read about MDT.
REFRESH OPERATING SYSTEM USING MDT 2013
I have windows 7 installed and have some folders on desktop and on C drive and also on D drive
screenshots given below

I had already created task sequence for installing windows 7
Boot your machine from MDT via network

Run deployment wizard by clicking on Run the deployment wizard to install new operating system

Select
option do not capture an image of this computer otherwise MDT capture an image of this
computer but we don’t want to capture image we just want to move user data which we selected o
previous steps

When ready click on begin

MDT first run User stat capture to capture user data and settings see screen shoot given below use
is being processed

After
user state capture all user data and settings before installing operating system it clean drive then
install operating system we are going to refresh operating system using MDT 2013 that’s why MD
clean drive before installing any operating system otherwise MDT format this partition and perfor
installation

After cleaning drive MDT start installing operating system see progress screen shoot given below

After operating system installation MDT restore all user data and settings with the help of USMT
state migration tool)

When deployment complete click on finish

You can see your all data is restored as it was before refreshing Operating system using MDT 201

That’s all we had refresh our windows 7 operating system without losing any user data.

AUTOMATE MDT DEPLOYMENT Chapter
7 WIZARD
In
this chapter we are going to discuss on how to Automate MDT Deployment Wizard in which we
how to skip unwanted pages on deployment wizard in MDT. At the time of deployment we see se
pages on deployment wizard we can choose pages which we want to see at the time of deploymen
wizard. Pages we see at the time of MDT deployment wizard are given below.
1. Welcome Page
2. Network Credentials Page
3. Task Sequence Page
4. Computer Details Page
5. Mover data and settings Page
6. User Data (Restore) Page
7. Local and Time Page
8. Capture image Page
9. Ready Page
See screenshot

These
are the pages we see at time of LTI deployment We can skip pages which we want to skip to
automate our deployment process in MDT. We can automate our deployment by editing two files
two files are:
CustomSettings.ini
Bootstrap.ini
To
edit these files open deployment workbench right click on Deployment share go to Properties the
go to Rules tab there you can find your CustomSettings.ini and Bootstrap.ini you can also find the
two files on deployment share folder then in control folder.
When you first see these files it’s look like screenshot given below.

Now we are going to edit CustomSettings.ini after editing CustomSettings.ini it’s look like
[Settings]
Priority=Default
Properties=MyCustomProperty
[Default]
OSInstall=Y
SkipCapture=YES
SkipAdminPassword=YES
SkipProductKey=YES
SkipComputerBackup=YES SkipBitLocker=YES
SkipTaskSequence=YES TaskSequenceID=001
SkipComputerName=YES OSDComputerName=Win8
SkipDomainMembership=YES JoinWorkgroup=Workgroup
SkipUserData=YES
SkipLocaleSelection=YES KeyboardLocale=en‐us UserLocale=en‐us
UILanguage=en‐us
SkipTimeZone=YES
See screen shoot given below

Click on apply and then click on ok after that update your deployment share to apply changes then
to client machine and boot it from network after booting we can see welcome page

Run deployment wizard then we see network credentials page

After that all pages are skipped see screen shoot given below

We skipped some pages by editing CustomSettings.ini you can also skip welcome page and netwo
