“The Help” Project

Project Based Learning:

Summary: After reading the novel “The Help” by Kathryn Stockett, the students will create a
blog where they will write about racism, xenophobia, hobos, and other margined people in the
21st century.

Instructions:

1. Students will read the novel.


2. Students will create their own free account in weebly.com.
3. Write a short essay about the topic to publish in your presentation page in weebly.com.
(They will have to research information about why people decide to live in the streets,
information about racism, margined people, etc.)
4. Write a short segment “About the author”.
5. Students will interview 4 people. They have to interview a hobo, a person from another
country, someone who has been through racism, an older person who lived in the
and/or 1930’s and 1940’s. (Students will work on their questions in the classroom.)
6. Finally, the students will write an entry in the blog summarizing and analyzing their
findings.

Objectives:

1. Provided instructions the students will create questions for their interview.
2. Students will work with the online website weebly.com.
3. Students will interview assigned persons.
4. Students will analyze the information provided, the information found in their research
and interviews.

The student includes a picture and a short biography of 10 Points
themselves in an “About the Author” section. (3 sentences)
The student conducts a 5 question interview to three people 10 Points
who has suffered racism. The 5 questions and answers are
included in the entry.
The student analyzes the interview in the previous entry and 10 Points
includes comparison and contrast with the novel “The Help”.
The student researches about xenophobia and writes an entry 10 Points
where they include at least 2 sources. Sources must be cited
MLA style and the citations should be included at the end of
the entry.
The student interviews a homeless person or a person who 10 Points
has worked with them. The interview has to be at least 5
questions long. The student includes the interview in the
entry.
The student analyzes the interview in the previous entry. 10 Points
All of the entries are the equivalent of a page and a half essay. 10 Points
Except the interview but including the analysis.
None of the entries have grammatical errors. 10 Points
Students will hand in the project on the assigned due date by 10 Points

Students who do not hand in the rubric or have not finished the
website on the assigned date will lose 10 points each day until they
reach zero.
