ENGR 100W: Guided reading Ms.

Clare Cordero

1. What is the IoT?

Internet of Things is the network of uniquely identifiable physical objects that have
embedded technology and interact with other similar devices over the Internet to help
achieve operational efficiencies.

2. What do you see as three key benefits of IoT?

Smartfarming, reducing carbon emissions, and energy savings.

3. What do you see as three key challenges that implementation of IoT faces?
IoT’s security, privacy, and its unnoticeable presence in today’s world view
(comparatively) are the three main challenges facing IoT’s large-scale implementation.

4. What does the author mean when he states, “The IoT currently represents
something of a double edged sword”?
Because it present many opportunities to boost the efficiency of products and services
and self-optimize daily appliances, as well as having an immature market which makes
investment a risky business.

5. What types of IoT deployments will deliver “demonstrable business value”?

Services such as predictive maintenance of systems, energy saving in smart buildings,

6. What are the top five industries involved with IoT startups?
Home, Software Platforms, Healthcare, Lifestyle, and Fitness.

7. In terms of funding, what are the top five categories?

IoT Enterprise, IoT Utilities/Energy, IoT Fitness, IoT User Interface, and IoT Hardware
Platforms.

8. The two graphs show that Utilities/Energy are at the bottom for companies
involved with IoT and yet near the top for funding. Explain the environmental
impact of Utilities/Energy being near the top for funding.
As Khera suggested in his GreenTalk, energy saving in smart building can be a major
driving force for IoT’s implementation. This can have positive effects such as saving up
to 70% in energy, bringing out operational efficiencies, providing comfort and
productivity for residents, and automated diagnostics.

9. Why does the author think enterprises will manage their own IoT implementation
in the future instead of using system integrators and third parties?
Because there is a multitude of technologies to master, companies are eager to partner
with system integrators and third parties alike. The upcoming few years is the time frame
that the idea needs to consolidate itself in mainstream use, and that should allow enough
time for businesses to gain the experience and confidence necessary to roll out their own
IoT implementations.

10. Name three strong IoT vendors.

Microsoft Azure, Cisco Jasper, IBM Watson.

11. What does the author mean when he describes the IoT as an immature
ecosystem?
He means that there is potential behind IoT’s drive to become a major driver of digital
transformations, followed by business models integrated over global networks.
Immaturity that currently exists in the current architectures, technologies, standards and
vendors makes them moving targets, which in turn makes investment a risky business

13. What is the purpose of an abstract?

To address readers familiar with the technical subject and those who need to decide
whether it is in their interest to read the full report.

14. What are the main differences between a descriptive abstract and an
informative abstract? When you analyzed a journal article for your recent
assignment, did the authors write a descriptive or an informative abstract?
Explain your reasoning.
Descriptive abstracts tend to focus on the information contained in a report and does not
provide the general findings (e.g., results, conclusions, or recommendations), while
informative abstracts present the said findings. I believe my journal article had
informative writing because they presented the result of their study and their
conclusions/applications of the study to real world problems.
