The Little Turtle

Vachel Lindsay

There was a little turtle.

He lived in a box.
He swam in a puddle.
He climbed on the rocks.

He snapped at a mosquito.
He snapped at a flea.
He snapped at a minnow.
And he snapped at me.

He caught the mosquito.

He caught the flea.
He caught the minnow.
But he didn't catch me.
Black Cat, Tan Cat
by Lill Pluta
Look at Black Cat.
He’s on his mat.
He’s happy, fat, and glad.
Tan Cat walks by,
his tail held high.
And now Black Cat is mad.
He thinks Tan Cat
wants on his mat.
Black Cat will never share.
It is so sad.
Tan Cat feels bad.
They could have been a pair.
Snakes
By Mariah Deitrick
A snake can glide from side to side.
They’re really long and like to hide.
They have long backbones, but no hair.
They use their tongues to taste the air.
They taste your scent if you are near,
And hiss a threat for you to hear.
It’s wise of you to clear their way,
So you don’t have an awful day!

I Think You’re Cute

by Bruce Lansky

I think you’re cute.

I really do.

I like your face

and figure, too.

I like your eyes.

I like your nose.

Don’t change a thing—

except your clothes.

My Grandma’s Teeth
by Bruce Lansky

My grandma’s teeth are like the stars.

She keeps them sparkling bright.

And like the stars up in the sky

her teeth come out at night.

Birthday Wish
By Diane ZuHone Shore

When I turned eight I made a wish

I thought was really great.

I wished my birthday came each week,

A year’s too long to wait.

Be careful when you make a wish,

It may indeed came true.

Although I’m just in second grade

I’m almost forty-two!
