 Refer Approved Shop Drawing for Painting and Apply paint to
exposed piping according to the following, unless otherwise
indicated:
1. Interior, Ferrous Piping: Use semigloss, acrylic-enamel
finish. Include finish coat over enamel undercoat and primer.
2. Interior, Galvanized-Steel Piping: Use semigloss,
acrylic-enamel finish. Include 2 finish coats over galvanized
metal primer.
3. Interior, Ferrous Supports: Use semigloss, acrylic-
enamel finish. Include finish coat over enamel undercoat and
primer.
4. Exterior, Ferrous Piping: Use semigloss, acrylic-enamel
finish. Include 2 finish coats over rust-inhibitive metal primer.
5. Exterior, Galvanized-Steel Piping: Use semigloss,
acrylic-enamel finish. Include 2 finish coats over galvanized
metal primer.
6. Exterior, Ferrous Supports: Use semigloss, acrylic-
enamel finish. Include 2 finish coats over rust-inhibitive metal
primer.
 Ensure that temperature of surfaces to be painted and
surrounding air are between 10-32 Deg.C (45-95 deg.F).
 Ensure that the base paint and curing agent are thoroughly mixed
before application begins. Ensure that the paint is mixed for a
period of time as specified in the manufacturer’s product data
sheet(Appendix 6.7), prior to application
 Thinning of paints shall be as per the manufacturer’s
recommendations.
 Ensure that the adequate safe access is provided for the works
to be undertaken. Scaffolds ‘A’ type ladder/Mobile scaffolding will
be used painting for installed pipe and supports.
 Check that the base paint and curing agent to be applied are
correct and that the paint to curing agent is to the correct ratio as
specified by the manufacturer.
 Painting of installed pipes shall be done with adequate safely
precautions. Manufacturer’s Material Safety Data Sheets
(Appendix 6.6) should be available at locations where painting
works are performed.
 Ensure that good ventilation is provided for preventing
accumulation of toxic vapours where the painting is carried out
on large surface area or small confined spaces. Red Oxide
Primer contains combustible organic components such as white
spirit. Prevent the creation of flammable or explosive
concentrations of vapour in the air.
 Personal Protective Equipments as recommended in
manufacturer’s MSDS must be worn during the painting. Wearing
of air supplied breathing shield, hand gloves and eye protection
equipments will normally be necessary.
 Painted surfaces will be maintained for a specified drying time
recommended by the manufacturer.
 After completing the painting an NFI will be submitted to OBI
Engineers for the witnessing and verification
2.5.1 Surface Preparation
 Prior to start touch up/ repair painting, check and identify the type
of surface preparation required as per manufacturer’s
recommendations. Rusted/ damaged coatings on pipes or
requirements surface shall be marked up as necessary.
 All surfaces should be clean, dry and free from contamination.
Surfaces shall be assessed and treated indicated in the
manufacturer’s products catalogues.
 Bare steel surface with a little corroded portion may be prepared
by wire brush cleaning.
 Steel surface with large corroded portions shall be prepared by
power tool cleaning for removing contaminations.
 Edges of Galvanized hangers and supports of duct, pipe or
requirements shall be cleaned by power tools or wire brush prior
to start touch up.
 Cut edge portion of hanger rods/ angle bars/ attachments such
as reinforcements shall be smoothened prior to proceed with the
cleaning.
 Clean the surface with non petroleum solvents to avoid oil and
surface contaminations.
2.5.2 Paint Touch up Application (Zinc coated)
(Zinc coated metal Surface- ASTM D520 Type II will be used for
Galvanized steel surfaces. Require Dry film Thickness(DFT) for
finish coat is 1.3 mils, Min Volume of solids 35%, VOC
161grams/L, Drying time 3-4 hours @25 Deg.C)
 Ensure that temperature of surfaces to be painted and
surrounding air are between 10-32 Deg.C (45-95 deg.F).
 Ensure that the base paint and curing agent are thoroughly mixed
before application begins. Ensure that the paint is mixed for a
period of time as specified in the manufacturer’s product data
sheet, prior to application
 Thinning of paints shall be as per the manufacturer’s
recommendations.
 Ensure that the adequate safe access is provided for the works
to be undertaken. Scaffolds ‘A’ type ladder will be used for touch
up painting for installed pipe and supports.
 Check that the base paint and curing agent to be applied are
correct and that the paint to curing agent is to the correct ratio as
specified by the manufacturer.
 Zinc rich epoxy primer in accordance with ASTM D520 Type II
will be used for Galvanized steel surfaces.
 Touch up paint will be applied using ordinary paint brush or roller
brush depending upon the area or type of surface required touch
up. Cut edges of rod hanger support, angle bar reinforcement and
weld spots on galvanized ducts will be touched up by ordinary
paint brush.
 Touch up/ Repair of installed pipes and support shall be done
with adequate safely precautions. Manufacturer’s Material Safety
Data Sheets should be available at locations where touch up/
repair painting works are performed.
 Ensure that good ventilation is provided for preventing
accumulation of toxic vapors where the repair painting is carried
out on large surface area or small confined spaces. Red Oxide
