Acceptable Colour Changes
and Observations
AS and A2 Effective from September 2016
N.B. It should be noted that the exact colour of a solution often depends on the
concentration and the following are based on solutions of normal laboratory
concentration.
1
Content Paragraph Observation
phenolphthalein
2
Content Paragraph Observation
Na+ yellow/orange
K+ lilac
pink through cobalt glass
Cu2+ green-blue/blue-green
1.10 Qualitative 1.10.4 Test for SO42- make a solution and add a solution
tests of barium chloride or barium nitrate
– forms a white precipitate
1.10 Qualitative 1.10.5 Test for iodine Add a few drops of starch to the
tests solution, the solution will turn blue-
black/black-blue

Unit AS 2: Further Physical and Inorganic Chemistry and an Introduction to
Organic Chemistry
4
Content Paragraph Observation
with oxygen

Unit A2 1: Further Physical and Organic Chemistry
4.8 Carboxylic 4.8.6 Reactions of carboxylic with alcohols – sweet smell detected
acids acids with phosphorus pentachloride –
solid disappears, steamy/misty
fumes, mixture warms up
with alcohols
same reaction with water but less
vigourous
6
Unit A2 2: Analytical, Transition Metals, Electrochemistry and Organic
Nitrogen Chemistry
5.3 Volumetric 5.3.1 titrations I2 with S2O32- using starch: add the
analysis thiosulphate solution until the
solution is straw/yellow coloured
and then add starch; turns from blue-
black to colourless at endpoint
5.5 Transition 5.5.11 Recall the colour of the aqueous complexes of:
metals
Cr3+ green
Cr2O72- orange
CrO42- yellow
Mn2+ pink
Fe2+ green
Fe3+ orange/yellow
