Are you planning a visit to Virginia, USA? Then come to Colonial Williamsburg.
Before 1776, there wasn’t a United States of America – there were 13 colonies. One of those
colonies was Virginia. Its capital city, Williamsburg, was an important centre of the American
Revolution. Williamsburg was also the home of William and Mary College, the second college in
the USA after Harvard University. Three US presidents were students there. There was a palace
with special gardens in Williamsburg. There were many beautiful houses, a hospital, churches
and shops, too.
Colonial Williamsburg is a special area of Williamsburg. Today, it’s a “living museum”.
Everything looks like Williamsburg in the 1700s, including the buildings, transport and people’s
clothes. People in Colonial Williamsburg tell stories about life in the 1700s to thousands of
visitors. Visitors can see the old post office and go shopping at the bakery or sweet shop. They
can have lunch at The Raleigh Tavern, a famous restaurant from 1717. George Washington, the
first president of the USA, was at this restaurant many times.
