Step 2. Determine Horizontal Displacements

The displacement at height z from the base is obtained by substituting aH and

Step 3 Determine Maximum Story Drift Index

The maximum story drift index is obtained by referring to Fig A2.2 of reference book and scanning the
appropriate aH curve to find the maximum value of K2 which is then substitute in

(dy\ WH3 „
l dz) = 6(£7) 2(max')

For the given structure, k2(max) = 0.20 at an approximate height z/H=0.45. Therefore, the maximum story drift index
is obtained as

Step 4. Determine Bending Moments in the Wall and Frame

a. The total moment carried by the walls is obtained either by substituting aH and z/H in Eq. (11.16), or by taking
appropriate value of K3 from fig A2.3 and substituting in

._ wH2 z
Mfe(z) = — K 3 (a H , -)

For example, at the mid-ninth story level (z=29.75 m, z/H= 0.31) of the structure considered, K3=0.04. The moment in
the core is obtained as
z= 29.75
K3 = 0.04

Mb = 90 x94.5A2x0.04/2
= 1.61E+04 kNm

b. The total moment in the set of frmames at a level z from the base, as expressed in Eq (11.17) of the reference
book is equal to the diffference between the total external moment and the total moment in the walls at that
level.
w(H - z ) 2
Ms(z) = 2 Mb(z)

At the same mid-ninth story levelof the given structure, as in Item 4a the moment carried by the frmae is obtained as

Ms(z) = 90x(94.5-29.75)A2/2-16074.45

Step 5 Determine Shear Forces in Wall and Frame
a.
The total shear in the walls a a level z from the base may be obtained by
substituting aH and z/H in Eq (11.19) of reference book or by taking the value
of K4 from Fig A2.4 and substituting in Eq (11.33) of the reference book
QbO) = WHK4 (aH, z/H)

For example, at the mid-eigteenth story level (z= 61.25 m z/H = 0.65) of the
structure considered. K4 = 0.05 Therefore, the shear in the core is obtained as

z = 61.25
z/H = 0.65
K4 = 0.050

Qb(z) = 90 x94.5x0.05
= 425.25 kN

For a structure consisting of multiple walls, the shear force in the individual
walls is then obtained by distributing the total shear between the walls in
proportion to their flexural rigidities,

The total shear in the frames at a height z is the difference between the external
shear and the total wall shear at thet level, as determined above :

Qs O) = w(H-z)- Qb(z)

At the same mid-eighteenth story level of the given structure, as in item 5a the
shear carried by the frame is obtained as

Qs(z) = 90x(94.5-61.25)-425.25
= 2567.3 kN

Q4. Concentrated interaction force QH( from approximated analysis) at the top of the specified frame and the

bending moment in its roof beam and connected columbs due to QH using the cantilever or portal

method.

Concentrated Interaction Force (QH)

Reference was made to 11.6.3 of Tall Building Structures: Analysis and Design By Bran Stafford Smith
and Alex Coull and It states that " A study of the wall-frame interaction, and especially of the
concentrated interaction force QH at the top, leads to the notion that further stiffening of the structure
could be achieved by increasing the magnitude of the top interaction force ".
Referring to Eq(11.21) gives the value of the force as

«« =

that is, a function of the racking rigidity (GA) of the frame and the slope of the structure. The interaction
force could be increased simply by increasing the racking rigidity of the story of the frame adjacent to
the top of the wall, wether in " full height" or " curtailed-wall " wall-frame structure. The increase in
racking rigidity could be achieved in practice by increasing the inertia of the beams and column in the
story of the frame adjacent to the top of the wall, or by introducing a concrete diaphragm into the frame
in that story to give a very large increase in the racking rigidity. Studies have shown that in wall-frame
structures that are predominantly shear walls, reductions in the top deflections of up to 30% can be
achieved. In such cases, particular attention must be given to designing the frames, and the members
connecting the wall to the frames, for the locally high forces associated with the interaction."

Q „ = C^)g(tf )

QH at top would be calculated by substituting (GA)=E(GA) = 8069841.42, (dy/dz) at top = 0.00041 as

calculated [ (dy/dx) max] earlier and total height H = 94.5 (that is computed in earlier)

The required calculations are as follows:
1. Gust Factor
From Fig 17.2 roughness factor r = 0.375 for City Centre
Aspect ration W/H = 22.5 / 94.5

From Fig 17.5, gust energy ratio F = 0.29

Resonent turbulance factor sx F

R

That is the resonant turbulance exitation is greater than the background turbulance excitation

From Eq.(17.6), average fluctuation rate

v- ^

it-D
= 0.2 / (1 + 0.78 / 3.867 )A0.5 = 0.182

From Fig 17.6, peak factor gp = 3.75

From Eq.(17.4), gust factor

G - 1 + g v r ( B + fl)1/2
= 1 + 3.75 x 0.375 ( 0.78 + 3.867 )A0J = 4.031
That is, the peak dynamic forces and displacements are obtained by multiplying all static values due to the mean
wind loading by 4.031
