TAURANGA GIRLS’ COLLEGE

Year 11 Chemical and Physical Science Course Outline 2018

This course is based on Level 6 of the New Zealand Science Curriculum and prepares students for
qualifications in Level 1 Chemistry AND Physics. The course has been designed to give students a
broader base of knowledge as they prepare for the NCEA Level 2 academic Science subjects. It is aimed
specifically for students wanting to achieve well in Chemistry and Physics at Year 12 or 13 but is NOT a
pre-requisite for enrolment in these subjects.

EXTERNALS: At the end of each topic students sit a written test. This will model the external examination
held in November. From these tests students will receive grades that indicate the progress they have
made in that Standard. In Term 3 there will be a 2 Benchmark examinations, one for Chemistry and one
for Physics. These will cover all of the external standards. The grades may be required if a student is ill or
cannot sit their November examinations for some valid reason and therefore requires a derived grade.

INTERNALS: The other standard will be internally assessed with a written and/or
practical assessment. Because the Physics internal assessment is practical, there will
NOT be a re-assessment opportunity given.

Student Organisation:
Students must take responsibility for their own learning and seek help if it is needed, catch up on missed work and
ask for extra help if it is required. Regular tutorials occur after school and in lunchtimes if students need extra
assistance.
This year we will be using workbooks which can be purchased separately for each of the external standards at a
cost of $8.50 each.
If students miss a written test they must organise a time with their class teacher when they can take the assessment.
This must be done within a reasonable time after the original assessment date; otherwise the student will be
awarded a ‘Not Achieved’ for that assessment. Absence from an assessment may be explained by bringing a note
signed by a parent or guardian. If absence is not explained then a ‘Not Achieved’ will be awarded.

Student Obligations
1. Ensure you understand the assessment programme and policy (see separate handout)
2. Check the accuracy of the assessment by teachers when work is returned.
3. Ensure you understand the requirements of each assessment being completed.
4. Discuss any problems/concerns with the teacher/HOD.
