Art Forms: Visual, Auditory and Performing Arts

Arts is an expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, it expresses aesthetic ideas
that are put together.

Arts Forms:

1. Visual Arts- an art that is meant to be appreciated visually or can be enjoyed using our eyes and
art that occupies space.

Types of Visual Arts:


 Sculpture
 Painting
 Film
 Photography
 Fashion Design
 Graphic Design
 Other Related art forms that are in two or three dimensional forms.

Elements of Visual Arts:

 Line- always have direction


 Straight Line: Horizontal (Repose and Serenity) , Vertical (Denotes Action) and
Diagonal (Suggests action, life and movement)
 Curved Line: Crooked or Jagged/Curved Lines (Expresses energy, violence,
conflict and struggle)
 Color- property of light
-The light of the sun contains all the colors of the spectrum: violet, indigo, blue,
green, yellow, orange and red.
 Hue- dimension of color that give its name
 Primary Hues - blue, red, yellow
 Secondary Hues – orange, green and violet

Meaning of each color:

Blue- Coolest, arouses feeling of peace and quietness

Orange-Suggest deliciousness and warmth

Red-Warmest stands for passion and energy

Yellow-Most brilliant, suggest cheerfulness, magnificence life and splendor

Green- Symbolizes life and freshness

Violet-Represents shadows and mysteries

Black-Represents despair, death and pain


 Value- Refers to the lightness or darkness of a color, it gives the expression of
depth and solidity and lend form to paintings
 Tints – Values above the normal (pink is a tint of red)
 Shades – Values below the normal (maroon is a shade of red)
 Intensity- Refers to the brightness or darkness that gives color strength
 Texture- Elements that deals more directly with the sense of touch, it is the perceived
surface quality of a work of art, either smooth or rough
 Physical Texture
 Visual Texture
 Perspective- Deals with the effect of distance upon the appearance of objects
 Linear Perspective – Representation of an appearance of distance by means of
converging lines (ex: Railways)
 Aerial Perspective- Representation of relative distances of objects by gradations
of tone and color
 Space – Refers to the distance or areas around, between or within components of a
piece.
-Can be Positive (White or Light) or Negative (Black or Dark), open or closed, shallow or
deep and two-dimensional or three dimensional.
 Form – Describes the structure or shape of an object, consists of size and volume,
includes height, width and depth.
 Volume- Refers to the amount of space occupied in three dimensions
2. Auditory Arts- Art of combining and regulating sounds of varying pitch to produce compositions,
expressive of various ideas and emotions.
- Includes music in all its forms, it is heard, timed arts and exist in time.

Types of Auditory Arts:

 Music – art form whose medium is sound and silence


 Poetry – Form of literature that uses aesthetic and rhythmic qualities of language to
evoke meanings.
3. Performing Arts- Art forms in which artists use their body or voice to convey artistic expression-
as opposed to visual arts

Types of Performing Arts:


 Theatre- concerned with acting out stories in front of an audience using combinations of
speech, gestures, music, dance, sound and spectacle
 Dance- Refers to human movement either used as a form of expression or presented in
society
 Opera- Singers and musicians perform a dramatic work combining text and musical
score
 Mime- Acting out a story through body motions without use of speech
 Speech- Process and act of speaking or giving a lecture to a group of people in a
structured manner
 Film – Series of still images that when shown on screen create an illusion of motion
images.
