Course Description:

Human Resource Management (HRM), one of the major business functions of organizations
involves all management decisions and practices that directly affect or influence the people,
or human resources, who work for the organization. An organization’s employees enable an organization to
achieve its goals and the management of these human resources is important to an organizations
success. HR being the key business partner, in today’s contemporary organizations, the role of HRM has
gained great importance due to a shift in the business environment.

The course provides an overview of the fundamentals of human resource management and the
importance and impact of human resource function in an organization. Drawing from
operational and strategic perspective, this course examines the challenges facing human
resource managers in contemporary business environment and seeks to develop an
understanding of human resource management practices in the continually changing social,
economic, industrial relations and organizational environments. The course will focus primarily
on seven major areas: Human resource management, planning human resources, attracting and
selecting human resources, placing, developing and evaluating human resources, rewarding
human resources, maintaining high performance and evaluating human resources strategies

Course Objectives:

1. Develop understanding of various HRM functional capabilities required to plan,


select, develop, and motivate workers.
2. Develop an understanding of the impact of changing social, economic,
technological and organizational environment on HR processes and practice.
3. Prepare students to evaluate and apply theories of social science disciplines to
workplace issues with the help of case study method.
4. Develop students’ ability to analyze and critically evaluate HR policies and
practices and problems with the help of recent cases written by top institutes of
the world.
Course Outcomes:

After successfully completing this course, students will be able to:


 Develop the knowledge, skills and concepts needed to resolve actual human resource
management problems or issues.
 Manage the employment relationship, which is a shared responsibility between
employers, management, human resources specialists, and employees. Investigate how
HRM is responding to current business trends, opportunities, and challenges.
 Identify the human resources needs of an organization or department.
 Conduct a job analysis and produce a job description from the job analysis.
 Evaluate the procedures and practices used for recruiting and selecting suitable
employees.
 Assess training requirements and design a successful orientation and training program.
 Discuss workplace health and safety programs and the roles of the employer and the
employee in enforcing health and safety policies and procedures.
 Explain the responsibilities of management, HRM specialists, managers, and employees
in managing the employment relationship in a unionized or a non-unionized
environment.

Quizzes:
Short announced quizzes will be taken. The number of quizzes/assignments will be 4-6. After every two
chapters are covered, a quiz will be taken. No make‐up quizzes will be given.
Case Studies:
Case studies are main source of learning for this class. According to given schedule students will read the
cases thoroughly and will actively participate in case discussion. A major portion of the student’s internal
marks is Case Participation (CP) that solely depends on participation of student in case discussion.
