AP World History

Course overview

During the tenth grade year, students will be responsible for the time periods from pre-
history to modern times for the AP exam in May. This year is a continuation of the work
that was put into 9H; therefore, we will focus on topics of post-1450. Pre-1450 will be
reviewed at the end of the year prior to the AP exam. The following are the time periods
that the students will be responsible for at the end of the year:

• Foundations: Pre-Classical and Classical eras 8,000 BCE to 600 CE

• Post-Classical era: Civilizations Interacting 600-1450
• The First Global Age 1450-1750
• Age of Revolution and Empire 1750-1914
• The Global Community 1914- present

Class Supplies

The following supplies will be needed throughout the school year.

• Binder
• Notebook
• Loose leaf paper
• Folder
• Pens/pencils (blue or black ink only). Points will be deducted for not using blue
or black ink and/or pencils.

Class Expectations:

Tardy Policy:
Students are expected to be in the classroom ready to get started when the bell
rings. Students therefore, will be considered tardy if they are not in their seat when
the bell rings. A detention will be assigned every third tardy.

Textbooks:
It is expected that students will have their textbooks and notebooks in class every
day, even testing days. Please make sure their textbook is covered at all times and that
papers are not stored in them. They are not folders.

Homework:
All graded assignments are due at the beginning of the class period. If a student is
absent from class, but is in school, the assignment is still due. If assignments are not
turned in on time the assignment will be subject to the following homework policy.
Late homework will be subject to the following penalties:
• Assignment not turned in at the beginning of class when it is due 10% of the
points will be deducted.
• Assignment turned in one day late, 25% of the points will be deducted
• Assignment turned in two days late, 50% of the points will be deducted
• More than two days late, the assignment will no longer be accepted.

It is certainly understandable that an occasional situation will arise when a student can
not complete an assignment. In these cases the student should feel free to explain the
situation to the teacher and arrangements will be made for the completion of the
assignment.

Absent Policy: Students are responsible for all missed assignments and notes. If an
assignment or test is scheduled for the day that they are absent, they will make up the
work on the day that they come back. If an assignment is given on the days of their
absences, they will be given the same time period to finish the work.

Electronic Devices: Students should not bring any electronic devices into the classroom
for any reason. Electronic devices include, but are not limited to, I-pods, cell phones,
gaming systems, calculators, etc… If a student does not follow this policy the electronic
device will be confiscated and returned at the end of the day. If problem persists then the
electronic device will be turned into the office and a parent or guardian will be required
to pick it up.

Academic Honesty: If there are any cases of academic dishonesty (cheating, plagiarism,
etc...) the assignment will be given a zero. This applies to all assignments, whether it is a
test or a simple homework assignment. The parents and administration will also be
notified of the situation.

Grading Policy

• Homework: Students will be required to complete assignments at home. Failure

to complete homework assignments regularly on time and with quality will result
in a poor overall average in the class.

• Writing Assignments: Students will also be required to complete writing

assignments, both at home and in the classroom. Essay rewrites will be at the
teacher’s discretion.

• Quizzes: Students will be given quizzes on a regular basis. Quizzes will be

multiple choice and short answers.

• Tests: Students will be given unit tests that are essay based. The questions
and/or topics will be given ahead of time and all essays will be finished in one
class period. Essay rewrites will be at the teacher’s discretion.
• Projects: Throughout the school year the students will be asked to complete
projects, both individually and cooperatively. The projects may include, but not
limited to:
o Research projects
o Presentations
o Timelines
o Book reports

Grading: The average grade will be based off of percentages; with each assignment will
be worth 100 points. The following is the break down for each type of assignment:
• Test and Projects – 30%
• Quizzes and Writing assignments— 30%
• Homework and class work— 40%
• Extra credit is rare and is given at the teacher’s discretion.
