made a steal and dribbled four-fifths of
the surface for a layup and 55-45 advan-
tage with 2:57 remaining.
Lexi Levy accepted a long feed ahead
and finished for the next points, and the
remaining 2:12 was largely a formality.
Manchester had 15 points to top Sus-
quehanna Valley, three of them created
by a strength-taxing heave ahead of the
halftime buzzer virtually certain to
achieve “most-viewed” status on press-
connects.com.
“The thing I felt we weren’t doing was
playing our game the last time we played
them, we let them dictate play,” said
Saints coach Colleen Jayne. “We fell into
what they wanted us to do instead of
what we do, and part of that is scoring, on
the fast break or just in general, getting
all of our weapons moving.”
And so the visitors did just that in the
rematch, atop fairly well ruling SV in the
rebounding category. Regardless of
what the final tally sheet may read, an
overwhelming majority of meaningful,
possession-deciding rebounds landed in

Strawn stamped her mark on this one
early— in accordance with her coach’s
advice.

two on her strong side, and next a similar

Norwich went on a 17-10 fourth-quarter
run to secure a STAC road victory. Ma-
kenzie Maynard scored nine of her
game-high 24 points in the final period
and made all four of the Purple Tornado’s
3-pointers. Teammate Meghan Komen-
darek contributed 14 points.
Katie Flynn led the Blue Devils with
13 points and five steals. She scored nine
points in third quarter, helping to cut
Chenango Forks’ deficit to 37-32. The
Blue Devils also got a whopping 15
blocks from Lyndsey Stone, who scored
eight points.
Corning 53, Union-Endicott 42: Tay-
lor Herberger scored a game-high 12
points to lift Corning to a STAC win over
the hosts. The Hawks outscored the Ti-
gers, 17-11, in third quarter to take a 37-28
lead. Herberger made two 3-pointers in
the quarter and finished with four.

A closing flurry to the half brought a
mid-range jumper from Levy with 38
seconds left, a left-elbow conversion in
transition by Strawn, and then … Shot of
the Night.
A hurried inbound and rush following
Strawn’s goal led to SV’s Manchester
dribbling smoothly into a launch from
perhaps a stride past the midcourt stripe
that fell as the buzzer sounded to draw
SV within 32-27.
But then came a quick 7-2 Seton CC
burst to open the third.
First came Strawn drilling one from
Olivia Voorhees’ 584 series featured a
205 and a 200 for Elmira.

when Hauer stole a baseline inbound
pass and outletted. When Hauer convert-
ed Levy’s feed to the block with 3:34 to
play in the third, Seton CC led by 39-29.
It was a stretch of basketball in which
the Sabers played something other than
tidily.
“Third quarter seems to be our Achil-
les heel, for the last two years, careless,
sloppy, too many turnovers, miss a few
layups_ just not good basketball,” said
SV coach Chad Freije.
After Susquehanna Valley made its fi-
nal surge in the fourth, the Saints con-
verted 10 of 12 free throws.
The rebounding piece of the equation
did not escape Freije’s powers of obser-
vation.
“We did a good job the first time keep-
ing them off the glass, this time we did
not,” SV’s coach said. “A team like that,
you’ve got to limit their second chances.
You let them, they’re going to get put-
backs and kick-outs for threes.”
Nor was Strawn’s considerable influ-
ence on this victory lost on Jayne.
“Last game against them, Hanna did
not play her game, she played backward
instead of forward last time,” Jayne said.
“I had a conversation with her, told her,
they can’t stop you. If you want to play
defense on somebody and lock them
down, you can. If you want to shoot a
three, you can. If you want to get to the
rim, you can. You did none of that last
time.
“This time she attacked, she got ev-
erything she wanted for herself and for
others. It was a difference maker.”
Ahead for these two could be a tie-
breaker to decide STAC Central Division
supremacy, and come March, perhaps a
win-or-pack-it-in contest to see which
represents Section 4 in Class B state
playoffs.
