INTERNATIONAL COLLEGE OF THE CAYMAN ISLANDS

COURSE SYLLABUS
The mission of the International College of the Cayman Islands (ICCI) is to prepare students for career
placement and enhancement. The ICCI education instills attitudes, behaviors, sensitivities, skills and
knowledge that are essential to life and learning. The ICCI experience advances the potential for
leadership and a commitment to community service. ICCI equips graduates with practical skills of
critical thinking, problem solving and self-directed learning for success in the 21st century job market.

Course Title: Seminar on Technology and Society


Course Number: BE 422
Course Description: Seminar deals with the influences which technological
development and society have upon each other and the problems arising from
technology. Includes lectures, reading, and field experiences.

1. Students will demonstrate a knowledge of and skill in use of terms
and concepts as measured by instructor's grading of written papers,

discussions and verbal reports.
Outcomes
2. Students will demonstrate through discussions, field trips and
written papers their knowledge of the issues and also what they
learned from fellow students as measured by instructor.
3. Students will demonstrate an ability to debate or justify issues
related to topics and contents of their own papers and papers
presented by fellow students.
Students will demonstrate ability to write papers for the seminar and
discuss them intelligently without reading the papers.

All the objectives will be covered weekly as the student completes his
or her assignments throughout the seminar.
Instructional Methods The instructional methods are based on individual presentations by
seminar attendees, corporate presentations and lecture by the instructor.
Upon completion of the class, papers written by students and presentation
on assigned topics will constitute most of the grade.
Assessment Criteria The class evaluation will be based upon class participation by asking

and Methods of thoughtful questions, daily reflection papers on the days’ events,
Evaluating Students presentation of assigned material and a final presentation by students. The
final presentation must be 15 - 20 minutes long with a written APA style
paper.

The grading will be based as follows:

Course Requirements Students are to attend all sessions. Students are expected to read the text
book prior to coming to Miami and be prepared to participate in
discussions. Please further note that if you are more than 5 minutes late to
any session of the seminar you will lose 2 points off your participation
grade for each time you are late, up to 5 total points, so plan to arrive early
at each session.

Please note that there are no excuses for arriving late or leaving early
from the seminar. There is enough time to make plane, work or family
arrangements when you receive this syllabus.

Reflection Paper
Each student will prepare an one page (between 300-400 words) reflection
on the day’s field trips and/or activities
Due by 11:59 p.m. on the night of the actual field trip and/or activities

Final Debate
There are 10 questions from the textbook handed out at the first meeting
that must be answered. You will be required to cover ONE topic/issue.
You will present at least 4 reasons FOR and AGAINST the moot.
The rest of the class will ask you questions accordingly.

Written Paper
Each student will prepare a ten-page term paper on a required topic in
APA citation style. The ten pages do not include table of contents,
bibliography, abstract, cover page or any drawings that may be attached.

Please make sure that you state specific citations and references to source
material for your research paper in the proper form. DO NOT
PLAGIARIZE from textbooks or any other sources. Do not copy from
your textbook.

Community Outreach Activities


Each student will be required to participate in two Community Outreach
Activities. The local one will be Taste of Cayman (January 27th) and the
overseas one will be held in Miami (details to be confirmed).

Extra Credit
Details will be sent out via Populi.

Final Presentation
Each student will prepare an oral presentation on their final paper and
present it in class without reading it for at least ten minutes. Students
should be well versed in the subject matter of their paper. All students are
expected to ask questions of each presenter after they complete their
presentation.

The E-Portfolio requirement will be as follows:


This is the grade for the overall e-Portfolio. The e-Portfolio is not due until
the March 18, 2018 but there are some of the items which will have an
earlier due date on Populi.

Here is a model of the sections of your final e-Portfolio:

- Introduction which includes your name, your Major and Concentration


(if applicable), your course name, course number and course description,
Student Learning Outcomes, and a copy of your syllabus (use official one
posted on Populi)

- One page (only) reflection papers on each of your Seminar Field Trips'
Experience

- Video recording interview with the Business Professional /Manager/


Director for your Final Presentation

- Final Seminar Written Paper

- Photo essay with a minimum of 10 photos with an explanation (at least 3


sentences) related to the learning outcomes of the course

- Five (5) business cards from business professionals from the field trips
with an explanation (at least 3 sentences) about how these relate to your
Seminar experience

- Community Outreach Photo Essay with a minimum of 5 photos with an


explanation (at least 3 sentences) of each photo

The paper is to be no less than ten pages, double spaced. The paper is to be in
APA standard term paper formats and your citation must consistently be in the
APA style. The page requirement does not include your abstract, table of
contents cover page or bibliography nor does it include any appendices or
attachments. The font is to be Courier or Times New Roman and no higher
than size 12.

You must have an appropriate abstract that sets out what the paper will cover,
how it will do so and what conclusions it will draw. I suggest you look up
appropriate abstract preparation in your English text or on the internet and make
sure your abstract is in the proper form.

You are expected to cite from a minimum of 5 relevant resources including


periodicals, journals, reference sources and the internet in the body of your paper
and to have appropriate foot or end notes. Wikipedia is not an approved source
and may not be cited or used in your paper. You are expected to use proper in
paper citation as well as having a proper bibliography in an approved format.

Students are reminded to review the school policy on academic dishonesty.


Plagiarism will not be tolerated and will be cause for failure of the course.

Please note that for each page below the 10 page limit you lose 10 points
on your grade. Failure to have a proper bibliography will lead to a loss of
up to 10 points, failure to have internal citations will be up to a 5 point
penalty, failure to have a proper abstract will be up to a 10 point penalty
and poor grammar and spelling will also lead to up to 10 points being
subtracted.

NO LATE SUBMISSIONS OF THE PAPER WILL BE ACCEPTED; NO


EXCUSE WILL BE CONSIDERED ACCEPTABLE. Please assume something
will go wrong and finish your paper early and turn it in early.
