2.2.6. Configuring the Switch MCU to integrate into a network

To help prevent downtime in the network, it is recommended to configure the new MCU
units first and then to connect them to the network.
After accessing the WEB interface of the Switch MCU, the Switch can be configured in a network
using the following steps:
1- Refer to the ports assignment of the Switch MCU
2- For configuring a network using the WEB interface, refer to chapter “Advanced
Configurations” of the document "WEB management user manual for SICOM L2 eth.
switches".
Note: If the Switch loses a single fiber strand, the port on the Switch is marked down.
Depending on the redundant protocol used and its configuration, an alternate route is
selected. The delay for the route in the network is according to the protocol used.
Examples of network configuration:
 A rapid spawning tree network (RSTP) configuration
 A DT-Ring configuration.
3- Saving the WEB configuration of the Switch MCU.
Note: The network can also be configured using the CLI, refer to document "SICOM series

2.2.6.2. Integrating the switch to a rapid spawning tree network (RSTP)

The RSTP protocol is one of the best methods for providing path redundancy while eliminating
traffic loops in bridged networks while providing fast path switching in case of failure. This is a
standard protocol and can be used with other manufacturer’s equipments.
A typical well connected tree will look like the picture below, every unit in the network is
reachable by two routes at all time which makes this network entirely protected by redundant
routes.
To help prevent downtime in the network, it is recommended to configure the new MCU
units first and then to connect them to the RSTP network.

 It’s possible to configure Port Priority and Path Costs for every port allowing
the creation of a preferred traffic route in the network. Port Priority can be
changed in increments of 16 only from 0 to 255 and the smaller the value the
more priority the port has. Cost is adjustable in increment of 1 from 1 to
200000000. The Port Priority and the Port number are used to compose the
port ID, this value is used in the root port selection calculation.

Please note that by default the Path Cost will be automatically computed based
on the interface speed. If you need to specify costs manually you will have to
change the Cost Count value to NO.
4- Click Apply to save the changes.

To help prevent downtime in the network, it is recommended to configure the new MCU
units first and then to connect them to the DT-Ring network.

DT-Ring can realize fast recovery in the event of a break in the ring, however time delay still
exists. The time delay can be figured out by the formula:
Max recovery time = (Quantity of the switches in the ring x 2.5 + 10) ms
The maximum recovery time is related to the quantity of switches in one ring, more Switches
the network has, slower will be the recovery time.

An example of a DT-ring network configuration using the WEB interface is shown in the next
figure.
1- In Ports Settings section, make the appropriate changes to Domain Name, Domain
Id, Station Type, Ring Port1 and Ring port2, DT-RING+.
 Ring Port1 and Ring Port2: The RightWON Satellite MCU ESM-4 type (RWU
030004) allows you to decide which ports will participate in the DT-Ring, only 2
ports can participate in a DT-Ring network. Refer to section on ports assignment
(Ports FE1 and FE2 are both reserved).
 Station Type: Only one Switch can be set as the ring master, the other Switches
need to be configured as slave.
 The Domain ID must be the same for all the switches participating in the DT-
Ring.
 For management ease, the Domain Name should also be the same for all
Switches.
2- Click Apply to save the changes.
3- In DT-RING State List section, a properly configured ring will report the status Ring
State: RING-CLOSE.
4- After configuring the network, you need to save your configuration.
