To whom it may concern,

My name is Melissa Lundberg and I am interested in applying for the available English
teacher position at your school. I heard about this position through the Teacher Education
Program at the UCLA where I am working towards a Masters in Education. In the program I am
developing invaluable skills that will help me propel your school mission towards higher student
motivation and engagement.
I believe praxis is an integral part to learning, which is why I chose to continue my
education at UCLA to become the best teacher I can be for my students. Some theoretical
concepts I have explored include, but are not limited to: celebrating community and identity
in urban schools, critiquing dominant narratives/perspectives, and implementing Ethnic Studies
curricula in the classroom. I specifically align with the findings of Ladson-Billings around building
curriculum via culturally relevant pedagogy. I have practiced implementing this methodology
in my student teaching at Hawkins High School by acknowledging student knowledge and
using it to drive our mastery learning. Additionally, Vygotsky and Sawyer have inspired my own
practices of social constructivism, which emboldens me to balance student investment with
course material.
I am prepared to do this work because of my extensive experience working with youth.
My passion is in working with communities that have been historically marginalized. My Spanish
literacy skills also enable me to better communicate with the majority population of LAUSD.
Connecting with school communities and families is something I personally resonate with and
think is absolutely essential for student success. My experience working with under resourced
communities in particular helps prepare me for the schools I wish to serve at.
I know I will be an asset to your school because I am focused, dedicated, and
passionate in developing my students’ reading, writing, speaking, and listening abilities as they
pertain to their own life endeavors and academic success.
Thank you for your time and consideration. Please let me know if you have any
questions or need any additional information. I look forward to hearing from you.

Best,
Melissa Lundberg
