CHAPTER III

RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODOLOGY

This chapter is a presentation of the methodology and research design of this study. It

includes the discussion of the short description of design and research setting, the

respondents, the instrument used validity and reliability of the instrument, as well as the

gathering procedure and statistical treatment of the data.

Research Design

The descriptive-correlational method is used in this study. It is a type of descriptive design

used to estimate the relationship of two variables the dependent and independent. This

study examine the performance of selected students in their chosen course in senior high

school to achieve its purpose and determine whether the two variables have significant

relationship.

Research Settings

The study has been conducted at Sacred Heart High School located at Zone 1B Barangay

Calagbangan, Sipocot, Camarines Sur.

Research Respondents

The targeted respondent for this study are from the senior high school students of Sacred

Heart High School whose taking a course of Information and Communication Technology

or the Grade 11 and 12 TVL. The entire population of the two sections where selected.

But for some reason during the data gathering procedures many students from the said

section where absent.

Table 1. Shows the distribution of respondents of this study.

RESPONDENTS

GRADE LEVEL POPULATION MALE FEMALE

Grade 11- I.C.T. 28 12 9

Grade 12 -I.C.T. 13 7 4

Research Instruments

The researchers prepared a letter of request signed by the school principal,

advisers of both grade 11 and 12 TVL to conduct a survey during their vacant time. After

the approval of the request, data are gathered, which are later treated and interpreted.

The researchers have made use of two major instruments in this study. Firstly, the

results of the I.C.T examination result for firs grading of the students, in which through

it the level of academic performance is determine.

Secondly, the prepared questionnaire by the researcher that consist of positive

and negative effects of social networking sites on their academic performance. With the

use of these two instrument the relationship between the two variables will be known.

Data Gathering Procedure

In data gathering researcher asked the permission of the adviser of both classes Grade

11 and 12 TVL to conduct a survey in their class. The questionnaire should be answer

honestly by the respondents, it consist of four parts. Firstly the demographical profile of

the respondent, secondly the social media they commonly use, thirdly the time spend in

using social networking sites and lastly the negative and positive effects of using social

media that consist of ten (10) items. The respondent should rate the given effects with

the numbers that correspond with an interpretations. 5 as the highest effect, 4 has the

high effect, 3 has average effects, 2 has low effects and 1 has very low effects.
Statistical Treatment of Data

The descriptive-correlational statistical method is used to treat the gathered data. This

study have become possible through these following statistical instruments;

Mean measures the regular distribution. It is most frequently used in measuring average

of the examination results.

Frequency is used to determine the distribution of respondents.

Percentage is use to determine the performance level of the respondents in their selected

course which is I.C.T.

Pearson-Product Moment Correlation is used to measure the relationship of the two

variables, which are the result survey questionnaire and the academic performance as

the result I.C.T examination result for first grading.

Standard Deviation is a measure of the variation of data about the mean.
