1
SEMESTER 2, 1999 TIME : 1 2 HOURS
There are 12 questions in this exam.
All questions are to be attempted.
Graphic Calculators may be used.
Marks may be deducted for work which is poorly set out or if essential working is not shown.
TOTAL MARKS : 90

1 A bag contains 4 red, 5 blue and 2 green balls.

a A ball is drawn at random and its colour noted. What is the probability
that the ball drawn is:
i red
ii red or green
iii not blue?
b A red ball is drawn and not replaced. A second ball is drawn at random and
its colour noted. What is the probability that it is also red?
(Marks: (1 + 1 + 1) + 1 = 4)

2 A three metre ladder is leaning against a wall. It forms the hypotenuse of a

right triangle. The bottom of the ladder is 1.24 metres from the wall. How far up
the wall, to the nearest centimetre, will the ladder reach?
(Marks: 3)

3 Solve algebraically for x and y

a y = 3x – 2
y = 7 – 2x

b 4x – 2y = 4
x + 3y = 15
(Marks: 4 + 4 = 8)

4 By using your graphics calculator, answer each of the following questions

a For the equation y = x2 + 2x – 1, find the
i y intercept
ii x intercepts, correct to 1 decimal place
iii coordinates of the turning point

b For the equation y = 2x + 1, find the

i y intercept
ii x intercept
c Using your calculator or otherwise, find the coordinates of intersection points
of y = x2 + 2x – 1 and y = 2x + 1, correct to 2 decimal places.

d Using the information from above, sketch the graphs on the same coordinate
plane, clearly labelling all intercepts, intersection points, and turning points.
Your graph should be big enough to clearly show all the required information.
(Marks: (1 + 1 + 1) + (1 + 1) + 2 + 3 = 10)

5 Calculate x, correct to 2 decimal places, in each of the following.

a b x cm

6 An owl in the top of a 5.2 metre tree sees a mouse on the ground 10.3 metres
from the base of the tree.

a Sketch a picture of this situation

b Calculate the direct distance, to the nearest centimetre, of the mouse from the
owl.

c The owl leaves the tree and heads directly for the stationary mouse. Calculate
the angle formed, to the nearest degree, by the owl's flight path and the tree.

7 Transpose the following formulae to make the letter shown in the brackets the
subject.

a 2a + b = c (a)

PRT
b I = 100 (T)

c x + y = yt (y)

3
d (a + b) = c (b)
(Marks: 2 + 2 + 3 + 3 = 10)

8 Solve the following quadratic equations

a x2 – 81 = 0

b x2 – 5x = 0

c x2 – 7x = –12

d 6x2 – x – 12 = 0
(Marks: 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 12)

9 A construction company was hired to build a concrete tunnel under the Yarra River. The
cross-sectional shape of the tunnel is a rectangle with a semi-circle removed as shown in
the diagram. The tunnel is 400 metres long, 10 m in height and 20 metres in width.

a What is the radius length of the semi-circle part of the tunnel?

b Calculate the cross-sectional area of the concrete part of the tunnel

(shaded region), to the nearest square metre.

c Calculate the volume of concrete needed to build the tunnel, to the

nearest cubic metre.

d The inside of the tunnel, but not the road, is to be covered by sound-proofing
material that costs $5.00 per square metre. Calculate the cost to completely
sound proof the tunnel.
