SEMESTER 2, 1999 TIME : 1 2 HOURS
There are 12 questions in this exam.
All questions are to be attempted.
Graphic Calculators may be used.
Marks may be deducted for work which is poorly set out or if essential working is not shown.
TOTAL MARKS : 90
a A ball is drawn at random and its colour noted. What is the probability
that the ball drawn is:
i red
ii red or green
iii not blue?
b A red ball is drawn and not replaced. A second ball is drawn at random and
its colour noted. What is the probability that it is also red?
(Marks: (1 + 1 + 1) + 1 = 4)
b 4x – 2y = 4
x + 3y = 15
(Marks: 4 + 4 = 8)

d Using the information from above, sketch the graphs on the same coordinate
plane, clearly labelling all intercepts, intersection points, and turning points.
Your graph should be big enough to clearly show all the required information.
(Marks: (1 + 1 + 1) + (1 + 1) + 2 + 3 = 10)

6 An owl in the top of a 5.2 metre tree sees a mouse on the ground 10.3 metres
from the base of the tree.
b Calculate the direct distance, to the nearest centimetre, of the mouse from the
owl.
c The owl leaves the tree and heads directly for the stationary mouse. Calculate
the angle formed, to the nearest degree, by the owl's flight path and the tree.
(Marks: 1 + 3 + 3 = 7)

7 Transpose the following formulae to make the letter shown in the brackets the
subject.
a 2a + b = c (a)
PRT
b I = 100 (T)
c x + y = yt (y)
3
d (a + b) = c (b)
(Marks: 2 + 2 + 3 + 3 = 10)
a x2 – 81 = 0
b x2 – 5x = 0
c x2 – 7x = –12
d 6x2 – x – 12 = 0
(Marks: 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 12)
9 A construction company was hired to build a concrete tunnel under the Yarra River. The
cross-sectional shape of the tunnel is a rectangle with a semi-circle removed as shown in
the diagram. The tunnel is 400 metres long, 10 m in height and 20 metres in width.

a What is the radius length of the semi-circle part of the tunnel?
d The inside of the tunnel, but not the road, is to be covered by sound-proofing
material that costs $5.00 per square metre. Calculate the cost to completely
sound proof the tunnel.
