(jargon) commonly used in the field of natural resource management are presented. The glossary is useful
in improving communications and fostering understanding between Spanish- and English-s~eakingPersons.

i n t e r c h a n g e of i d e a s . In addition, the
s p e c i a l i z e d meanings of s c i e n t i f i c j a r g o n a r e
l o s t when t r a n s l a t e d i n t o t e r m s w i t h s o c i a l o g i c a l
c o n n o t a t i o n . Q u i t e o f t e n a g i v e n t e r m may h a v e
d i f f e r e n t meanings t o a f o r e s t e r , s o i l s c i e n t i s t
o r w i l d l i f e manager. I n o r d e r f o r a l i s t e n e r t o
r e c e i v e a c l e a r u n d e r s t a n d i n g of t h e
problem being d i s c u s s e d , t h e t r a n s l a t o r needs t o
b e f a m i l i a r w i t h t h e s c i e n t i f i c terminology
relevant t o the specialized topics.

s u b s e c t i o n s , e a c h of which i s d e v o t e d t o t e r m s .

arranged a l p h a b e t i c a l l y within s e c t i o n s beginning
w i t h t h e E n g l i s h o r S p a n i s h keyword, f o l l o w e d b y
the equivalent translation.
I t i s u n d e r s t o o d t h a t some p e r s o n s may
d i s a g r e e w i t h some t e r m s d u e t o t h e i r u s a g e o f
other similar jargon, but a t l e a s t they w i l l be
a w a r e o f i t s u s e i n o t h e r r e g i o n s and
disciplines.

simposios, l a b a r r e r a d e l lenguaje frecuentemente
impide un i n t e r c a m b i o e f e c t i v o d e i d e a s . Ademis,

Range Experiment Station

The Rocky Mountain Station is o n e of eight

regional experiment stations, plus the Forest
Rocky Products Laboratory and the Washington Office
Mountains Staff, that make up the Forest Service research
organization.

RESEARCH FOCUS

Research programs at the Rocky Mountain

Station are coordinated with area universities and
with other institutions. Many studies are
