Introduction to shapes
Objective: Students will begin to identify the four basic shapes (triangle, rectangle, square, and circle) in their
surroundings.
SOL: K.10
a) The student will identify and describe plane figures (circle, triangle, square, and rectangle)
b) The student will compare the size (smaller, larger) and shape of plane figures (circle, triangle, square,
and rectangle)
c) The student will describe the location of one object relative to another (above, below, next to) and
identify representations of plane figures (circle, square triangle, and rectangle) regardless of their positions
and orientations in space.
Materials: Cut outs of shapes (circle, triangle, rectangle, and square), “My shape became a ______” paper, attribute
blocks to talk about shapes

Discuss the four basic shapes (square, circle, rectangle, and triangle)
 A square has four equal sides (the same) and four corners
 A circle has zero sides and zero corners. It is round.
 A rectangle has two long sides and two short sides (four sides) and four corners.
 A triangle has three sides and three corners.

As each shape is introduced, have the children look around the room (become more aware of surroundings) and raise
their hand to share something they saw that was the shape.

 Read Everywhere You Look to introduce the shape hunt.

 Split into three groups and go on a shape hunt around school.
 After the shape hunt, discuss what we saw that were the different shapes.

Read Everywhere You Look to introduce the activity.

Activity: Choose one shape (triangle, square, circle, or rectangle) and use it as the focal part in a picture they create
using their colored pencils or crayons. Have the students label their picture with: My (shape name) became a

 A circle has zero sides and zero angles. Show circle from the attribute blocks to demonstrate.
 Read the Cindy Circle Shape poem.
 Read Circles -A book that introduces circles.
 Look for circles in our classroom and talk about those and other things we have seen that are the shape of a
circle.

Math workshop groups:

1. Make a circle page for the shape book with yarn
2. Explore with making shapes on the geoboards
3. Explore with making shapes with playdough

Rectangle
Objective: Students will identify and describe rectangles
SOL: K.10
Materials: Rectangle page, pipe cleaners, tape, pencils, geoboards and bands, pattern blocks

 A rectangle has four sides and four corners. Two sides are long and two sides are short.
 Allow students to choose one attribute block to hold, a circle or rectangle. Ask them to hold up their shape
if it has curved sides, straight sides, corners, etc.
 Read Ricky Rectangle shape poem.
 Read Rectangle
 Look for rectangles in our classroom and talk about other things we have seen that are the shape of a
rectangle.

Math workshop groups:

1. Make a rectangle page for the shape book with pipe cleaners
2. Explore with making rectangles with the geoboards
3. I-pad shape activity

Square
Objective: Students will identify and describe squares
SOL: K.10
Materials: Square page, popsicle sticks, geoboard and bands, “cute as a button” worksheet, playdough

 A square has four sides that are all the same length and four corners. Review circle, rectangle, and square.
 Read Sammy Square shape poem.
 Read Squares
 Look for squares in our classroom and talk about other things we have seen that are the shape of a square.

Math workshop groups:

1. Make a square page for the book with popsicle sticks
2. Explore with making square shapes with the geoboard
3. Complete “Cute as a button” worksheet. Color the circles red and the squares blue. When done can make
shapes with playdough at another table.

Triangle
Objective: Students will identify and describe triangles.
SOL: K.10
Materials: Triangle page, popsicle sticks, glue, pencils, geoboards, “beep, beep” worksheet, playdough

 Talk about how a triangle has three sides and three corners. Review circle, rectangle, square, and triangle.
 Pass out triangle and square attribute blocks. Sort them by color, shape name, number of sides.
 Read Triangles
 Read Tommy Triangle shape poem.
 Look for triangles in our classroom

Math workshop groups:

1. Make a triangle page for the book with popsicle sticks
2. Explore with making shapes on geoboards
3. Complete “beep, beep” worksheet. Color the circles red, triangles yellow, squares green, and rectangles
purple. If they finish early they can explore with making shapes out of playdough.

Math Unit 5: Session 1.5 - “Baby Square”

Objective: Students will identify shapes (rectangle, triangle, square, circle)
SOL: K.10
Materials: 18 Square papers, shape book cover page, “pizza shapes” worksheet, geoboards

 Read the story “baby square” while folding the paper to model. Give each student their own square and
retell the story having each child fold their paper.

Math workshop groups:

1. Make the cover page to the shape book using shape stamps
2. Complete the “pizza shapes” worksheet. Students will cut out the shapes and match on a graph for the
shape.
3. Explore with making shapes on geoboards

Objective: Students will be able to identify circles, squares, triangles, and rectangles
SOL: K.10
Materials: Color/Shape Bingo, pattern blocks, paper pattern blocks

Play the game color shape bingo.

 Model the game by doing a few practice rounds.
 Call out the shapes by describing them by number of sides, color, and number before showing them the
visual of the card to get them thinking about the description first.

Math workshop groups:

 Create a design using pattern blocks. Copy pattern onto paper using the paper pattern blocks.
