solenoid (no cams, linkages, or struts). See Figure 2.
This unique design offers the following benefits:
• Low energy requirements to close and open the switch
• Separate open and close coils eliminate the need for circuit
boards or relays in the body of the switch
• Critical opening operation powered by a heavy duty precision
spring which provides consistent opening speeds that are effec-
tively immune to variations in ambient temperature

All of the Edison capacitor switches can be opened and closed elec-
trically by applying rated control voltage to the proper terminals of
the actuator receptacle.
Additionally, the switches can be manually opened by using a hot- Figure 2. The 360 degree terminal ring (patent pending) for

the bottom of the switch.
Vacuum interruption
Eaton vacuum interrupters, specifically designed for capacitor
switching, include greatly enhanced contact life. Fast mechanism
operation combined with the superior interrupting capabilities of our
vacuum interrupter limits prestrike and restrike of switch contacts.
Additionally, the high-temperature rated contacts further extend
switch mechanical life.
A break on the single phase is accomplished by separating contacts
inside the vacuum interrupter. All arcing is contained within the
vacuum envelope.

sheets of water that could form leakage current paths which, when
heated by continuous flow, create a dry band path that deteriorates
the creepage withstand level.
The cycloaliphatic epoxy’s exceptional ability to resist electrical track-
ing reduces both flashovers and the associated cost of repairs. The
epoxy combines surface-tracking characteristics with robust alternat-
ing shed design per IEC 60815 to provide maintenance free service
even in extreme pollution conditions.

Construction features
Construction features of Eaton power capacitors include:
• CLEANBREAK element fusing system. Each element is protected
with a series connected CLEANBREAK current limiting fuse. This
patented fusing system incorporates the following features:
• Polymer fuse card provides isolated fuse mounting which
prevents potential damage to adjacent capacitor elements and
fuses
• Fuses are individually mounted within a polymer fuse tube. The
tube protects the fuse from damage due to adjacent element
failures and fuse operations. This design also requires no paper
in the fusing dielectric, thereby eliminating the generation of
extensive carbon arc by-products in the dielectric fluid. This
significantly improves the dielectric performance by preventing
fluid contamination and promotes proper clearing of element
fuse.
• The CLEANBREAK fuse operates in a current limiting mode to
chop the fault current into the failed element. This prevents the
energy stored in the parallel connected elements from being
discharged into the fault thus minimizing gassing and damage
to the failed element and adjacent dielectric.
• EX mechanical connection system. Provides solderless internal
connections that eliminate localized heating and cold solder joints.
The EX crimping system also allows 100% inspection during
assembly assuring integrity of internal connections and maximizes
operational safety.
• Individual closed loop capacitor fluid impregnation system.
Assures superior fluid impregnation and gas molecule evacuation

Fuseless capacitor banks

General
Eaton's fuseless capacitor banks, a Cooper
Power™ series product, feature the latest
capacitor technology, the standard-duty (SD),
heavy-duty (HD), and extreme-duty (XD) all-film
capacitors. The banks are designed to meet or
exceed all applicable ANSI®, IEEE®, NEMA®,
and IEC standards. The industry demand for
more reliable and lower total life cycle cost (TLC)
capacitor equipment has essentially made the
fuseless capacitor bank the standard for substation
applications at 34.5 kV and higher. Fuseless banks
have been offered since the late 1980s and are not
a new technology, but an application of an existing
technology, the all-film capacitor introduced 1971.
Fuseless capacitor banks offer the following
advantages:
• Low initial and operating costs
• Low losses
• Small footprint
• Ease of unbalance protection
• Ease of installation and maintenance
• Increased protection against animal faults
• Increased reliability and availability
• Ideal for harmonic filters

Metal-enclosed capacitor banks

General
Eaton's metal-enclosed capacitor banks feature
the latest capacitor technology from its Cooper
Power™ series product line based on over 70
years of experience in design and manufacture
of power capacitors. The capacitor banks are
designed to meet or exceed all applicable ANSI®,
IEEE®, NEMA®, NEC®, and IEC® standards.
Metal-enclosed capacitor banks from Eaton
are engineered-to-order to meet customer
system requirements and indoor or outdoor
site conditions. Metal-enclosed banks are fully
assembled and tested which significantly reduces
site installation costs and time. Custom designs
are available for utility, commercial, and industrial
applications globally. The banks can be designed
to the requirements of IEEE Std 693™-2005 for
seismic conditions.
Metal-enclosed capacitor banks–the sustainable
solution–improve efficiency in the power system
by reducing losses from point of application to
the generator, saving money and decreasing CO2
emissions. Capacitor banks also improve power
quality by supporting voltage and mitigating
harmonic issues–when applied as harmonic filters.
Metal-enclosed banks are typically* offered in the
following ratings:
• 2.4 kV to 38.0 kV
• -50 °C to +55 °C (-58 °F to +131 °F)
• Up to 200 kV BIL
• Up to 63 kA (sym)
Metal-enclosed designs are available as single-
step, multi-stepped, de-tuned, and with harmonic
filtering. Compared to traditional open rack
substation designs, metal-enclosed banks can
provide the same benefit but within a smaller
footprint.

Standard fusing and accessories

Bus-mounted expulsion type capacitor fuses are standard
equipment
Faulted capacitors are quickly removed from circuits with bus-
mounted fuses furnished on factory-assembled capacitor blocks.
A noncurrent-carrying, stainless steel flipper ejects the fuse leader
from its tube when the link melts. Voltage stress across the fuse
tube is eliminated by the resulting air gap between the end of
the fuse tube and the capacitor terminal. There is no possibility of
tracking and eventual flashover, even after exposure to weather
and contaminants. Positive indication of a blown fuse can easily be
detected, close up or from a distance, by the flipper’s horizontal
position.

Capacitor block accessories

The following accessories can be provided with capacitor blocks:
• Automatic switching controls
• Isolating or grounding switches
• Current-limiting fuses
Figure 5. Block shorting switch.
• Oil switches, vacuum switches, or circuit breakers

Block shorting switch

To assure maintenance personnel safety while working on or around
capacitor banks, Eaton offers the FW14Y1 block shorting switch. The
switch, a single-pole, hookstick-operated blade switch that mounts
on the capacitor block frame, provides visual indication and removes
any doubt that capacitors are fully discharged.

fuses
The NXC® capacitor fuse is a current-limiting,non-expulsion, full-
range clearing device. The fuse has an automatic leader ejection
feature which provides positive interruption and capacitor isolation. It
will interrupt at least 50,000 symmetrical amperes.
The NXC fuse is particularly applicable for fusing units where the
stored energy exceeds the joule capability of the capacitor. The joule
capability of Eaton’s capacitors ranges from 10 to 15 kilojoules.

Elevating structure assembly

For equipment protection and personnel safety, an aluminum
elevating structure assembly is available to provide a raised
installation for factory-assembled capacitor blocks. The structure will
also support additional aluminum framework for mounting switches,
controls, and insulators.
Bottom and top plates of the elevating structure match to assure
perfect alignment. Bottom plates of the structure are coated with
asphalt paint for mounting on concrete footings. The structure is
shipped partially unassembled. The only field assembly required is

Inrush current-limiting reactors

Eaton inrush current-limiting reactors limit transient discharge
currents during switching of parallel steps in closely spaced
capacitor banks. The fully tested design assures proper protection for
switching equipment. Inductance selected will limit inrush current to
safe levels in most banks, thus preventing switchgear damage.

Capacitor hanger frames

Eaton manufactures capacitor hangers for three or six capacitors.
These hangers, made of galvanized steel, are shipped unassembled
to allow for a smaller and more compact package. Note that these
hangers are not recommended if switches are to be used with the
capacitors. See Table 4 for ordering information and see Catalog
Data CA230001EN Capacitors - Pole-Mounted Racks with Single-
Phase Units for rack frames suitable for direct mounting of switches
or other accessories.

Capacitor unit mounting spacers

These corrosion resistant aluminum spacers bolt on to the bottom
of the capacitor unit hanger bracket, effectively increasing the “D”
dimension shown in Catalog Data CA230003EN Medium-Voltage,
Standard-Duty, Heavy-Duty, and Extreme-Duty Single-Phase,
Unfused Capacitor Units and Accessories. Spacers are available
from 2” to 6” (50.8 mm to 152.4 mm) in 1” (25.4 mm) increments.
Spacers should be used whenever an installation requires a larger
“D” dimension. This most commonly occurs when replacing old
capacitors in individually fused substation banks with capacitor
units having differing “D” dimensions. Maintaining this dimension
is usually required to ensure proper fuse operation. See Table 5 for
ordering information.

Inrush current-limiting reactors

Inrush current-limiting reactors limit transient discharge currents
during switching of parallel steps in closely spaced capacitor banks.
The fully tested design assures proper protection for switching
equipment. Inductance selected will limit inrush current to safe
levels in most banks. The compact design of the CCM13B1 reactor
(Figure 7) is particularly suited for use in pole-mounted and
metal-enclosed banks.
