SMART Goals

How to write an effective SMART goal


SMART Goals are:

S = Specific
M = Measurable
A = Attainable
R = Results-Oriented
T = Time-bound
Example: Standard 4F

● During the 2017-18 school year I will incorporate at least 2


group-work activities in my lessons per quarter in order to
increase the overall average on our CDAs from 60% to
70%.
● Time-Bound
● Specific, Measurable
● Results-Oriented, Measurable
Example: Standard 1A & 1B

● During the 2017-18 school year I will utilize exit tickets in my


classroom at least 3 days per week in order to better
understand the skills abilities of my students and increase the

overall average 6 grade EOG math proficiency by at least
5%.

Example: Standard 4C

● During the 2017-18 school year I will incorporate a variety of


materials and instructional strategies in order to better meet the
needs of all students and increase the overall proficiency on the
post-test from 65% to 85%.

Example: Standards 1A & 4B

● During the 2017-18 school year I will utilize exit tickets in


my classroom at least 3 days per week in order to better
understand the skills abilities of my students and ensure
at least 60% of my students show growth on the EOG.

Non-Examples

● Students will do better on the EOG.


● Student scores on the EOG will increase to 75%.
● Teacher will incorporate more group work in my lessons.
● My students will learn how to divide fractions.
● I will reflect 3 times per week.
● Teacher will incorporate critical thinking skills into her
lessons.

○ Your SMART goal!
● Activities
○ What will you DO to accomplish your goal? This should read almost as
a step-by-step guide.
● Expected Outcomes
○ examples: increased collaboration, increased achievement on unit
tests, increased growth, better participation, etc.
● Evidence of Completion
○ Examples: communication logs, lesson plans, PLC notes, gradebook,
etc.
