 sympathetic fibers carry the afferent impulses from ovary and enter T10 segment of the

cord
o Ligaments of the ovary:
 ovarian ligament (round ligament of ovary): remaining of the upper part of the
gobernaculum ovary; extending from the medial margin of the ovary to the upper end of the
lateral wall of the uterus
 suspensory ligament of the ovary (infundibulopelvic ligament): part of the broad ligament
between attachment of the mesovarium and lateral wall of pelvis, contains ovarian vessels
and lymphatics
 broad ligament
 Mesosalphinx
 Mesovarium: peritoneum, attaches the ovary to the broad ligament of uterus
 rectouterine pouch (Douglas): peritoneal recess between rectum and uterus
 uterovesical pouch: peritoneal recess between uterus and urinary bladder
 vagina: A muscular tube that extends upward and backward from the vulva to the uterus; 8 cm; anterior and
posterior walls are normally in apposition
o Female genital canal, excretory duct of menstrual flow and part of birth canal
o Upper part is pelvic part; lower part is part of perineum
o vaginal portion of the cervix: upper end is pierced by the cervix, projecting downward and backward
into the vagina
o Blood Supply: vaginal artery (from internal iliac), vaginal branch of uterine artery
o Venous Drainage: Internal iliac vein
o Lymphatics:
 Upper 3rd: external and internal iliac nodes
 Middle 3rd: internal iliac nodes
 Lower 3rd: superficial inguinal nodes
o Nerve supply: inferior hypogastric plexus
o fornices of the vagina: area of the vaginal lumen around the cervix is divided into 4 regions
 anterior (1)
 posterior (1)
 Lateral (2)
o Relations:
 Anteriorly: upper part to the bladder, lower part to the urethra
 Posteriorly: upper 3rd rectouterine pouch, middle third to the ampulla of rectum and anterior
fibers of levator ani, lower third to the perineal body
 Laterally: upper part with the ureter, middle part to the anterior fibers of levator ani, lower 3rd
to the urogenital diaphragm

Perineum in charts and models

 diamond-shaped space
 Boundaries:
o Anteriorly: symphysis pubis
o Anterolaterally: ischiopubic rami
o Laterally: ischial tuberosities
o Posterolaterally: sacrospinous and sacrotuberous ligaments
o Posteriorly: tip of coccyx
 Triangles of the perineum (line drawn between the ischial tuberosities):
o Anterior triangle, urogenital triangle
o Posterior triangle, anal triangle
