This course is a survey of Islamic Architecture and Art between the seventh and the
eighteenth centuries. We will cover a geographical area that extends from Northern
Africa and Spain in the west, to the Indian subcontinent in the east. While Islam was a
strong presence in these regions, artifacts that have been classified as “Islamic” also
reflect influences from other cultures. Architects, planners and artists in these regions
produced extraordinary works that included architecture, city planning, the arts of the
book and the applied arts. We will examine these works in their historical and cross-
cultural contexts.
