AECOsim Building Designer -
Annotation
Class Date: 01-Feb-2013

Module Overview
This course demonstrates the essentials of Annotation. When you start a 2D
project in AECOsim Building Designer, you will work with very standard CAD
drawing tools. The important difference is that your 2D drawing will eventually be
the basis for a 2D and 3D model. Therefore, it is important to develop solid design
Company: Archway Systems Inc

habits.

Module Prerequisites
• An understanding of Building and Design concepts
• Computer-Aided Design (CAD) experience is advantageous but not required
FOR REVIEW ONLY - Not intended for use in training.

Module Objectives
After completing this module, you will be able to:
• Annotate Drawings and Sheets
• Place and Modify Dimensions

File Organization

File Organization

Creating a New file and Seed files

Select the New File icon in the Windows File Open dialog.

New DGN files are created using appropriate Seed files, or DGN file templates,

which are used to specify the working units and the various settings for a model
file. Several Seed files are delivered for each Discipline and designers can create
additional seed files for their own custom applications.

Place Text
Place Text can be accessed from Main Building > Place Text.
Class Date: 01-Feb-2013

The Text Editor - Word Processor window opens when you select text placement
or editing. Input from the letter keys and arrow keys on the keyboard is treated as

text input until you press the Escape key or select another tool.
FOR REVIEW ONLY - Not intended for use in training.

The Word Processor operates like any other text editor. You can set a variety of
attributes such as bold, italics, and underline by either clicking the appropriate
icon or using standard keyboard shortcuts such as <Ctrl + B>, <Ctrl + I> and <Ctrl +
U>.

Text can be copied and pasted from other applications into the word processor
and all formatting will be retained.

Hint: The Word Processor will also open if you double click on a text string with the
Element Selection tool.

Text Attributes

The color and other attributes of text are set by a Text Style if one is selected in
the tool settings. When you are not using a Text Style, text will be placed using the
color that is active in the word processor text editor and the settings set in the
tool settings.

Fonts

Fonts that are used to define the typeface of text elements are stored in external
files that are referenced by AECOsim Building Designer. It can use and display
TrueType fonts, AECOsim Building Designer fonts, and AutoCAD SHX fonts.

Justification

As with most other elements, text is positioned in the model with a data point,
FOR REVIEW ONLY - Not intended for use in training.

which in this case, is referred to as the origin, or insertion point.

Line spacing

Line Spacing is the distance between individual lines of text in multi-line text. This
value also specifies the distance text is placed away from an element when the
placement method is set to Above, Below, or Along. Line spacing is commonly set
to 1/2 to 2/3 of the text height.

Text size

Text size is determined by its height and width, which can be different values.

Annotation Scale

AECOsim Building Designer - Annotation 8 Aug-12

Annotations

Annotation Scale defines the scale for text in a file. When you specify an
Annotation Scale, the text you are placing is scaled by that amount. You will
usually create text styles at a scale of 1 to 1 for plotting. Then you enable the
Annotation Scale lock when placing the text in a file so that it appears in the
correct size.

If you were creating a 1m = 200m scale design, any text that you place would have
to be 200 times bigger than normal so that it looks correct. With Annotation Scale
set to 200:1, you do not have to worry about calculating the size of the text.
Class Date: 01-Feb-2013

Text Styles

Text Styles are named sets of text attributes, such as Font, Width, Height, and
Color, that allow you to place text within a model in a consistent manner. Text
Company: Archway Systems Inc

elements can be placed with or without a Text Style, but text elements placed
with a Text Style are automatically updated if the style is modified.

Placing Text by Origin

There are different methods by which you can place text. The most common, By
Origin, lets you place the text in a drawing using the location of the justification

setting and a data point you enter. By Origin places text at the angle that is active
in the file (Active Angle) and uses the active text settings.

Dimensions

Dimensions
Dimensions are necessary to show the size of, and relationships between,
elements or overall models.
Class Date: 01-Feb-2013
Company: Archway Systems Inc
FOR REVIEW ONLY - Not intended for use in training.

The components of a Dimension include:

Dimension Styles

Dimension definitions can be created and saved in named styles in the Dimension
Styles dialog. Similar to text styles, these pre-defined styles let you place
dimensions in a consistent manner.

Alignment

Alignment options control the alignment of linear dimensions.

Dimensions

• View - Parallel to the view x or y axis

• Drawing - Parallel to Design Plan x or y axis
• True - Parallel to the element being dimensioned
• Arbitrary - Parallel to the element being dimension but the extension lines are
not constrained to right angles
Class Date: 01-Feb-2013

The Association option associates the dimension you are placing with the points
on the element being dimensioned. If the element is then modified, the
dimension updates to reflect the change.
