Professor Jun Yang Comment

1 To further improve literature review

Present a discussion on past experience in

Hong Kong reclamation projects and common
practices and challenges to common practice
2 in more detail

To further elaborate on the instrumentation,

3 monitoring and in-situ sections
To improve the quality of figures throughout
4 the dissertation

To further elaborate the design section of the

5 dissertation

To number all equations and figures

throughout the dissertation and improve the
6 quality of plots

Add further sections to discuss the large lateral

7 movement observed at the project site
To present a further section of the reasons for
the large differences in the predicted and
actual ground lateral movements and how the
analysis can be further improved to provide a
8 more realistic estimate.
Response to Comments

I have included a comprehensive review of in-sit and field testing

in Hong Kong in this literature review since our last meeting. This
includes details of the significance of these tests and how the
results are interpreted to support construction and design. I have
also referred to several reseach papers that details the use of
these test in Hong Kong conditions. A similar approach has been
taken for the instrumentation and monitoring. Please refer to
Section 2.5,2.6 and 2.7.

I have devoted section 3 to include an extremely detail review of

reclamation practice in Hong Kong including the history and
evolution of reclamation practice. As part of this review I have
discussed some important reclamation case histories in Hong
Kong and the lessons learnt over the years. I have also included a
section on the reclamation best practice developed for Hong
Kong, the overall lessons learnt over the years as well as the
challenges to future practice.

I have reformatted all figures in this disseratation

I have added a design flowchart in Appendix B to present a high

level view of the reclamation design and the steps withing.
Additionally I have further detailed the design in-depth in
Sections 5 and 6. I have also added section to detail the lateral
movement design using Plaxis

All figures and equations have been numbered.

I have carried our Plaxis modelling for the reclamation lateral

movement design. The assumptions, input derivation and
modelling techniques are presented in Section 6.11.
Chapter 8 presents a comprehensive review of the
instrumentation and monitoring data and the back analysis. It
comments on the field observations and investigated the reasons
for the large differences in the field resuts and design predictions.
It also details the implication of these variances, the remedial
measures on site and how the design and construction can be
further imporived to reduce such a large difference in design and
actual results.
