Correct Installation Steps for Cap Bolt Locking Plate

Updated Cone Crusher Tapered Shaft Nut/Cap and Shaft Nut Wrench Assembly
Telsmith has recently introduced an updated Tapered Style Shaft Nut and Cap for the complete Cone
Crusher line. The new tapered style nut and cap (Fig. 1) helps reduce the bridging effect in many
applications. When properly applied to coarse feed applications a reduction in bridging of large or slabby
material can occur when using this New Tapered Nut and Cap.
When using the new style shaft nut, a new Main Shaft Nut, Shaft Nut Cap, Shaft Nut Cap Bolt and Washer
and a Shaft Nut Cap Bolt Locking Plate (A, Fig. 1) are required. Installation and removal of the new style shaft
nut requires a new style Shaft Nut Wrench Assembly (F, Fig. 1). A new Shaft Nut Cap Lifting Lug (D, Fig. 1) is
available and is recommended for removing and installing the shaft nut cap.

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Install Mantle (J, Fig. 1) and Burning Ring (H, Fig. 1) but DO NOT weld the burning ring into position
at this time.
2. Thread the new Tapered Shaft Nut (G, Fig. 1) onto the Main Shaft (I, Fig. 1) by hand until snug.
3. Slide the Shaft Nut Wrench Assembly (F, Fig. 1) down onto the tapered nut. Tighten the wrench locking
bolts until the wrench is firmly locked on the tapered nut.
4. Use a sledgehammer or maul against the wrench assembly ears to fully tighten the shaft nut.
5. Loosen the wrench assembly locking bolts and remove the wrench from the tapered nut. Store the
wrench assembly for future use.
6. Slide the Lifting Lug (D, Fig. 1) down into the Shaft Nut Cap (E, Fig. 1) aligning the ears on the lug
with the slots in the cap. When the ears have completely slid through the slots, turn the lifting lug one-half
turn to engage the ridge on the shaft nut cap. Keep the shaft nut cap facing straight up and lower into
position on the tapered shaft nut. Spin the lift lug one-half turn and remove from shaft nut cap.
7. Pour the Smithbond backing material to fill the voids between the mantle and head. Allow the backing
material to harden.
8. Install the Shaft Nut Cap Bolt (B, Fig. 1) and Washer (C, Fig. 1). Torque to specification for your
model cone crusher (Table 1).
Table 1: Shaft Nut Torque Values
Cone Model Bolt Diameter Torque Specification

38 1-1/4” 840 ft-lb (1138 N-m)

44 1-1/4” 840 ft-lb (1138 N-m)
52 1-1/2” 1500 ft-lb (2033 N-m)
57 1-1/2” 1500 ft-lb (2033 N-m)
68 1-1/2” 1500 ft-lb (2033 N-m)
9. Position the Shaft Nut Cap Bolt Locking Plate (A, Fig. 1) down in the shaft nut cap next to the head of the
cap bolt (Fig. 2). Tack weld the Shaft Nut Locking Plate
to the Shaft Nut Cap (Fig. 2) using Stainless Steel
weld rod E(R) 309L.
IMPORTANT: If Shaft Nut Cap Bolt Locking Plate
is not welded to the Shaft Nut Cap, the Bolt could
loosen and cause damage to the Shaft Nut Cap or
Crusher. If you have further questions on how
or where to weld Shaft Nut, Shaft Cap or Burning WELD
Ring, contact Telsmith Service for detailed instructions.
10. Weld the Burning Ring to the Mantle using Stainless
Steel weld rod E(R) 309L. Apply 2” welds in four
places as shown in Fig. 2.
11. Weld the Shaft Nut Cap to the Burning Ring using
Stainless Steel weld rod E(R) 309L. Apply 2” welds in
four places as shown in Fig. 2.
