A Long Walk to Water

Walk-a-thon
This fun event allows students to raise awareness and money for a school in Africa,
while promoting wellness and fitness. 7th graders read a historical fictional novel by
Linda Sue Park called a Long Walk to Water about a young girl who spent the majority
of her day walking to well to collect water for her family. She was unable to attend
school because her family depended on her for survival. This walk-a-thon is symbolic
of the day-to-day struggles that many children around the world must endure to
provide basic needs. All donations will be contributed to a small rural school in Sierra
Leone that seeks to provide equal access and quality education to orphans from the
Ebola outbreak in 2014. You may read more about the school at:
http://www.sierrainternationalacademy.com
● Students will walk/run around a designated course on the Wheeler Middle
School’s back field, during the school day
● PRIZES will be earned for donations, as well as completed laps
● This is a flat donation event, not a per lap pledge
