Objectives:
1. SWBAT explain the importance of Harriet Tubman.
2. SWBAT tell how they can be initiators of change in their communities.

Lesson Outline:

5 min Read-A- The Young Harriet Tubman: Freedom Fighter by Anne Benjamin
Loud Slave: someone who is legally owned by another person and is forced to
work for that person without pay.
Who else do we know that was fighting for freedom?
Plantations: a large area of land especially in a hot part of the world
where crops (such as cotton) are grown
Cruel: people who hurt others and do not feel sorry about it.
Hate: a very strong feeling of dislike
Racial Oppression: To treat (a person or group of people) in a cruel or
unfair way because of the color of their skin.
10 Discussion How did Harriet’s activism help her and her family?

Answer: 300
How did Harriet continue helping people after slavery? Why else was her
activism important? What other things did she do to for her community?
Answer: helped with women’s rights, set up schools for black kids, made
sure families had shelter and clothes.
