Assessment “Of” Examples

1. Character Profile Assignment
As the summative assignment for a novel study of Stephen King’s The Body, I had my students
do a Character Profile Assignment. The assignment involved many steps, including casting the
character for a modern film adaptation, creating “posts” related to the character’s traits,
creating “posts” that identified and explained themes in relation to the specific character, and
identifying some of the character’s interests. This is the rubric that was used for this
assignment.

2. Poetry Portfolio Assignment

As the summative assignment for a poetry unit, the students in my grade 10 academic English
class were to create a Poetry Portfolio. The assignment involved many aspects. Firstly, students
had to come up with a theme and an inquiry question that would drive their portfolio. They
then were to analyze a poem, and to write their own original poem, and spoken word poem.
This is the rubric that was used for this assignment.

3. Monster Assignment
This rubric is one that my Associate Teacher used to mark an assignment that she did with our
grade 10 applied English class. The assignment involved students finding a news article of their
choosing, comparing it to the story Monster in a series of paragraphs. This rubric is much
different, than the other two I’ve presented, but is also great. The drawback with this style of
rubric is that the criteria is less explicit for the students. The reason that I like this rubric
though, is that the teacher has space to really elaborate on the marks given with direct
feedback.
