Welcome to

Sunday Morning at St. John’s

We are gathered to celebrate God’s gifts and sent to respond to the needs of the world.

Choi Hyun-Joo, age 10, Jerusalem

In 1976, children from around the world were invited to paint the city of Jerusalem to celebrate the unification of the
many faiths in the city. Each child drew the city as she imagined it. Each Jerusalem was his own. Here a young South
Korean girl draws a new Jerusalem where the world’s children dance together and doves of peace watch over the city.

FIRST READING Please be seated. Acts 16:9-15
During the night Paul had a vision: there stood a man of Macedonia pleading with
him and saying, “Come over to Macedonia and help us.” When he had seen the
vision, we immediately tried to cross over to Macedonia, being convinced that
God had called us to proclaim the good news to them.
We set sail from Troas and took a straight course to Samothrace, the following day
to Neapolis, and from there to Philippi, which is a leading city of the district of
Macedonia and a Roman colony. We remained in this city for some days. On the
sabbath day we went outside the gate by the river, where we supposed there was a
place of prayer; and we sat down and spoke to the women who had gathered
there. A certain woman named Lydia, a worshiper of God, was listening to us; she
was from the city of Thyatira and a dealer in purple cloth. The Lord opened her
heart to listen eagerly to what was said by Paul. When she and her household
were baptized, she urged us, saying, “If you have judged me to be faithful to the
Lord, come and stay at my home.” And she prevailed upon us.

The Word of Salvation. The Word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God. Thanks be to God.

Psalm 67 Deus misereatur

Read in unison.
1 May God be merciful to us and bless us, *
show us the light of his countenance and come to us.

2 Let your ways be known upon earth, *

your saving health among all nations.

3 Let the peoples praise you, O God; *

let all the peoples praise you.

4 Let the nations be glad and sing for joy, *

for you judge the peoples with equity
and guide all the nations upon earth.

5 Let the peoples praise you, O God; *

let all the peoples praise you.
6 The earth has brought forth her increase; *
may God, our own God, give us his blessing.

7 May God give us his blessing, *

and may all the ends of the earth stand in awe of him.
The 9:15 service skips to the Gospel Acclamation.

(8:00/11:00) SECOND READING Revelation 21:10, 22-22:5

In the spirit the angel carried me away to a great, high mountain and showed me
the holy city Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God.
I saw no temple in the city, for its temple is the Lord God the Almighty and the
Lamb. And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God
is its light, and its lamp is the Lamb. The nations will walk by its light, and the
kings of the earth will bring their glory into it. Its gates will never be shut by
day—and there will be no night there. People will bring into it the glory and the
honor of the nations. But nothing unclean will enter it, nor anyone who practices
abomination or falsehood, but only those who are written in the Lamb’s book of
life.
Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing
from the throne of God and of the Lamb through the middle of the street of the
city. On either side of the river is the tree of life with its twelve kinds of fruit,
producing its fruit each month; and the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the
nations. Nothing accursed will be found there any more. But the throne of God
and of the Lamb will be in it, and his servants will worship him; they will see his
face, and his name will be on their foreheads. And there will be no more night;
they need no light of lamp or sun, for the Lord God will be their light, and they
will reign forever and ever.

The Word of Salvation. The Word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God. Thanks be to God.

THE HOLY GOSPEL John 5:1-9
The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ
according to John. † according to John. †
B Glory to you, Lord Christ. B Glory be to thee, O Lord.

After Jesus healed the son of the official in Capernaum, there was a festival of the
Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
Now in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate there is a pool, called in Hebrew Beth-zatha,
which has five porticoes. In these lay many invalids—blind, lame, and paralyzed.
One man was there who had been ill for thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him
lying there and knew that he had been there a long time, he said to him, “Do you
want to be made well?” The sick man answered him, “Sir, I have no one to put me
into the pool when the water is stirred up; and while I am making my way,
someone else steps down ahead of me.” Jesus said to him, “Stand up, take your mat
and walk.” At once the man was made well, and he took up his mat and began to
walk. Now that day was a sabbath.

The Gospel of the Lord. The Gospel of the Lord.

B Praise to you, Lord Christ. B Praise be to thee, O Christ.

The Gospel Acclamation is repeated.

SERMON

Silence follows the sermon.
(8:00/9:15) THE APOSTLES’ CREED
During the Easter Season we will recite the Apostles’ Creed instead of the Nicene Creed.
I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth;
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.
He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit
and born of the Virgin Mary.
He suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again.
He ascended into heaven,
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins
the † resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.
(8:00/9:15) PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

In the silences following each petition, all are invited to offer prayer silently or aloud.
Leader: Alleluia! What was dead shall live; what was dark shall shine; what was
forgotten shall be remembered, for the Lord is risen and walks among us. Let
us confidently bring before God the needs of all our world, asking God for
renewal, saying: Christ is risen, Christ is risen indeed.

In this Easter season which brings joy to all Christians, may we commit ourselves to the
growth of the church. We pray especially for

Nadia Stefko (called as Associate Rector of Christ Church, Winnetka), Bryan Cones (last
Sunday at St. Augustine, Wilmette, beginning PhD program). Are there others?

May all those who seek God find a spiritual home. For Christ is risen:
Christ has risen indeed.

God of life, strengthen our faith and renew our hope. We pray for the people of the
world especially

Syria (air strikes on civilians and aid workers), Bangladesh (murder of gay rights
activists), Iraq (terror attack), Philippines (hostage taking). Are there others?

On this day give us hope. For Christ is risen:

Christ has risen indeed.

For all who have need of the gift of Easter; for all who journey from illness to health,
from despair to hope, from grief to consolation, from loneliness to love, especially

Sylvia Kolb (family of Bettina Daszczuk, job search), Chloe Arlan (move to nursing
home), Catleya (friend of Dolly York), Christine (friend of Heidi Ellison Childress),
Wendy (friend of Heidi Ellison Childress), Jonathon Herrera, 19 (charged with murder
at coin shop), Bobbi Schultz (friend of Andria Anderson, heart attack), Joseph Marsden
(family of Iris Ripka, stomach cancer), Donna McConville (family of Caroline Kane,
cancer), Adrian Heaney (partner of Caroline Kane, cancer), Clare Simmonds (friend of
Mark Roberts, healing), Ellen Tan (friend of Dolly York, hyper thyroid surgery), Stacy
and Caleb Roth (friends of Cheryl Kreiman and Joe Lill, ICU), Jessica and Caitlin (family

surgery), Bob McCormick (husband of Angela McCormick, hospice care), Jeanne
Tortuga (friend of Andria Anderson, metastasized cancer), Elizabeth Plotner (family of

Susan Turner, chemo treatment), Mike Dillbeck (friend of Sue Boeman, melanoma),
Mark Mergener (friend of Marvin Childress, cancer), Kathleen Blake (mother of Ruth
Edwards, cancer), Kevin Flaherty (friend of Leslie Murray, cancer). Are there others?

For all our brothers and sisters, that death may have no more power over us.
For Christ is risen:
Christ has risen indeed.

Confident in the promise of new life in Christ we remember those who have died,
especially

Nan Meyer (friend of Tom Rae), Debra McLendon (family of Marj Monaghan), Leah
(friend of Heidi Ellison Childress), Mason Cormie (friend of Mio Nakamura), Luke
Kreiman (family of Cheryl Kreiman and Joe Lill), Patricia James (friend of Cheryl
Kreiman and Joe Lill), Petro Rymar (owner of Bart’s Coins), Angel J. Ortiz, Jr. (bouncer
at Brudder’s Bar), Ernest Josa (father of Cheryl Jarvis, in memorium). Are there others?
And for the 10 homicide victims in Chicago during the last week, Kenneth Allen, 53,

Bowman, 25, Dayharea Wilson, 16, Davon Barrett, 38, Glenn Wheeler, 24, Pierre
Johnson, 27.

For all who suffer and all who mourn, that the Lord God will wipe away all tears,
especially for the families of victims and
Marj Monaghan and family, Mio and Paul. Are there others?

For Christ is risen:

Christ has risen indeed.
In gratitude and great joy we praise you for the gift of Christ’s resurrection. We give
thanks for

Smolinski, Tim and Kathy Broderick (wedding anniversary). Are there other
thanksgivings?

May we be God’s sign of life in our world. For Christ is risen:

Christ has risen indeed.
Presider God of terror and joy, you arise to shake the earth. Open our graves and give
us back the past; so that all that has been buried may be freed and forgiven,
and our lives may return to you through the risen Christ. Amen.

CONFESSION OF SIN
During the Easter season there is no confession.

(11:00) THE BLESSING OF A MARRIAGE

Presider Lola and Ike, you have come here today to seek the blessing of God and of
his Church upon your marriage. I require, therefore, that you promise, with
the help of God, to fulfill the obligations which Christian Marriage demands.

Ike, you have taken Lola to be your wife. Do you promise to love her,
comfort her, honor and keep her, in sickness and in health; and, forsaking all
others, to be faithful to her as long as you both shall live?

Ike I do.

Presider Lola, you have taken Ike to be your husband. Do you promise to love him,
comfort him, honor and keep him, in sickness and in health; and, forsaking
all others, to be faithful to him as long as you both shall live?

Lola I do.

Presider Will you who have witnessed these promises do all in your power to uphold
these two persons in their marriage?

People We will.

Presider Let us pray.

Eternal God, creator and preserver of all life, author of salvation, and giver
of all grace: Look with favor upon the world you have made, and for which
your Son gave his life, and especially upon this man and this woman whom
you make one flesh in Holy Matrimony.

People Amen.
Leader Give them wisdom and devotion in the ordering of their common life, that
each may be to the other a strength in need, a counselor in perplexity, a
comfort in sorrow, and a companion in joy.

Amen.

Grant that their wills may be so knit together in your will, and their spirits
in your Spirit, that they may grow in love and peace with you and one
another all the days of their life.

Amen.

Give them grace, when they hurt each other, to recognize and acknowledge
their fault, and to seek each other’s forgiveness and yours.

Amen.

Make their life together a sign of Christ’s love to this sinful and broken
world, that unity may overcome estrangement, forgiveness heal guilt, and
joy conquer despair.

Amen.

Give them such fulfillment of their mutual affection that they may reach out
in love and concern for others.

Amen.

Grant that all married persons who have witnessed these vows may find
their lives strengthened and their loyalties confirmed.

Amen.

Presider Grant that the bonds of our common humanity, by which all your children
are united one to another, and the living to the dead, may be so transformed
by your grace, that your will may be done on earth as it is in heaven; where,
O Father, with your Son, and the Holy Spirit, you live and reign in perfect
unity, now and for ever.

Amen.
THE BLESSING OF THE MARRIAGE
The people remain standing. The husband and wife kneel.

O God, you have so consecrated the covenant of marriage that in it is represented the
spiritual unity between Christ and his Church: Send therefore your blessing upon these
your servants, that they may so love, honor, and cherish each other in faithfulness and
patience, in wisdom and true godliness, that their home may be a haven of blessing and
peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever. Amen.
The husband and wife still kneeling, the presider adds this blessing

God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit, bless, preserve, and keep you; the
Lord mercifully with his favor look upon you, and fill you with all spiritual benediction
and grace; that you may faithfully live together in this life, and in the age to come have
life everlasting. Amen.

THE PEACE
The peace of Christ be always with you. The peace of the Lord be always with you.
And also with you. And also with thee.

At The River
adapted by Aaron Copland
Shall we gather by the river,
Where bright angel’s feet have trod,
With its crystal tide forever
Flowing by the throne of God.
Yes, we’ll gather by the river,
the beautiful, the beautiful river,
Gather with the saints by the river
That flows by the throne of God.
Soon we’ll reach the shining river,
Soon our pilgrimage will cease,
Soon our happy hearts will quiver
With the melody of peace.

THE PRESENTATION
Please stand. After the offering is collected and brought forward the gifts are offered up.
All things come of thee O Lord,
And of thine own have we given thee.
THE EUCHARISTIC PRAYER Please stand.
The Lord be with you. The Lord be with you.
\⁄ And also with you. \⁄ And with thy spirit.
Lift up your hearts. Lift up your hearts.
\⁄ We lift them to the Lord. \⁄ We lift them up unto the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. Let us give thanks unto our Lord God.
B It is right to give our thanks and praise. B It is meet and right so to do.

It is truly right, and good and joyful, to give you thanks, all-holy God, source of life and
fountain of mercy. But chiefly are we bound to praise you for the glorious resurrection
of your Son Jesus Christ our Lord; for he is the true Paschal Lamb, who was sacrificed
for us, and has taken away the sin of the world. By his death he has destroyed death,
and by his rising to life again he has won for us everlasting life.

Therefore, joining with Angels and Archangels and with the faithful of every
generation, we lift our voices with all creation as we sing:

Sanctus The Hymnal #S-127

Holy, holy, holy Lord B Holy, holy, holy,
Lord God of hosts:
Heaven and earth
are full of thy glory.
Glory be to thee, O
Lord Most High.

Blessed is he that
cometh in the name
of the Lord.
Hosanna in the

Blessed are you, gracious God, creator of the universe and giver of life. You formed us in
your own image and called us to dwell in your infinite love.

You gave the world into our care that we might be your faithful stewards and show
forth your bountiful grace.

But we failed to honor your image in one another and in ourselves; we would not see
your goodness in the world around us; and so we violated your creation, abused one
another, and rejected your love. Yet you never ceased to care for us, and prepared the
way of salvation for all people.

Through Abraham and Sarah you called us into covenant with you. You delivered us
from slavery, sustained us in the wilderness, and raised up prophets to renew your
promise of salvation. Then, in the fullness of time, you sent your eternal Word, made
mortal flesh in Jesus. Born into the human family, and dwelling among us, he revealed
your glory. Giving himself freely to death on the cross, he triumphed over evil, opening
the way of freedom and life.

On the night before he died for us, Our Savior Jesus Christ took bread, and when he had
given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his friends, and said: “Take, eat: This is
my Body which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” B
As supper was ending, Jesus took the cup of wine, and when he had given thanks, he
gave it to them, and said: “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant,
which is poured out for you and for all for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink
it, do this for the remembrance of me.” B
