The Education Undergraduate Society arranges and provides Professional Development
workshops for education students at the University of Lethbridge. This letter is written at the
request of Vicky Sandberg who attended the following seminars during the months of
January and February of 2018:
Wednesday January 17th: Daniel Balderson: “Getting Involved in the Extracurricular”
Explore how getting involved in the school culture through coaching, intramurals, and student
clubs can be a rewarding experience and great opportunity for teachers.

Tuesday January 23rd: Richelle Marynowski: "Puzzles and Problems for Numeracy"
Explore commercial games and puzzles that can be used to develop numeracy in students. Be
prepared to come and play!

Wednesday January 24th: Lance Grigg, Monique Sedgwick, Josh Markle: “Chess, Executive
Function and Youth in the Criminal Justice System”
The Faculty of Education, Alberta Justice and the Faculty of Health Sciences are teaming up to
deliver a new program that will see youth being sentenced to learn chess as part of their
probation. See how this project will help develop executive function in at-risk youth.

Wednesday January 31st: Abby Salm: "Personal Inquiry Project: Teacher Mental Health &
Bell Let’s Talk Mental Health"
As part of Bell’s Let’s Talk Day Profession Semester III Graduate Abby Salm presents her
Profession Inquiry Project on prolonging teacher mental health throughout the school year.

Tuesday February 6th: Doug Checkley: “Working with Refugee Students”


Come explore how to welcome and support refugee students into your classroom and help set
them up for success.

Tuesday February 6th: ATA’s Heather Wilms: "PRISM: Professionals Respecting


Individual Sexual (and Gender) Minorities"
This workshop supports school leaders and teachers to understand the issues of gender and
sexual minority individuals, develop strategies to build an inclusive school community
(elementary and secondary) and establish and support the operation of a gay-straight alliance
upon student request.

Wednesday February 7th: Amy von Heyking: “Inclusive Teaching in Public and Private
Faith-Based Schools”
Alberta’s education system offers a range of fully publicly-funded and private faith-based school
options. Parents can also choose private schools or charter schools for their children. This
session will examine faith-based schooling in Alberta, and private and charter schools from the
perspective of those who may be interesting in teaching in these contexts.

Thursday February 8th: Beth Cormier & Robin Bright: "Book Bites for Secondary School
Readers"
The spiritual successor of the Professional Semester I Book Talks, Book Bites is a crash course
on the diverse selection of literature that teachers can bring into secondary school classrooms.

Tuesday February 13th: Greg Ogilvie: “Supporting English Language Learners in Content
Classrooms
Content classrooms provide a steep challenge for students who are also English Language
Learners. Come and explore some strategies to see content classrooms through the perspective
of ELL students and help students succeed.

Tuesday February 27th: Laurie Hawkins: “Down and Dirty: Quick Strategies to get to know
your students”
Come learn some quick strategies to learn about your students and establish a good rapport with
them.
