STATEWIDE INITIATIVES
The projects presented here represent social entrepreneurial initiatives, i.e., start-ups driven by an agenda
of social-value creation with a business objective of generating long-term market value for all select
strategic partners. Development of the projects are made possible with the strategic guidance of Utah-based
Little Bloomsbury Foundation, whose mission is to “promote peace and hope in an uncertain world.” The
foundation was formed in August 2009 by myself and co-founders and co-directors Vernon Parent, retired
Senior Staff Engineer at Lockheed, and Mark Thomas, Director of Huntsman School of Business at USU.

Successful launch of these initiatives relies on the dedication of fellow citizens, volunteers, corporate
sponsors, and private donors who we hope will come to share our goals and passions, as specified below:

(A) Projects under Review & Consultation

1. Radio Program Wan Li Lu Ten Thousand MilesTM

Predicated on the Chinese proverb “More wisdom is had by walking 10,000 miles than by reading 10,000
books,” the program promotes diversity, self-reliance, and a sense of global citizenship in support of
Ambassador Huntsman’s role in China. It also has a strategic objective to promote Utah as a multi-lingual
state and advance its second highest ranking (after Virginia) as America’s most business-friendly state.

2. Magazine “Big Issue of Utah”

The magazine is intended to be published locally and sold by aspiring entrepreneurs who do not meet
traditional criteria of employability due to social disabilities and mental challenges. It is inspired by Big
Issue, a popular weekly magazine published in seven countries including the U.K. for sale by the homeless.
(See www.bigissue.com). The initiative represents the fight against generational poverty which results not
from the lack of intelligence, diligence, or economic opportunity but from socially isolated familial conviction
of destiny, self-perceived unworthiness, and peer pressure against pursuing education and life alternatives
apparent to others in a democratic society. This accounts for up to 75% of associates who remain jobless
after one year’s sponsored training at Deseret Industries (DI). The project is expected to go under full review
by mid-2010 upon completion of an interdisciplinary feasibility study by business and journalism students.

(B) Existing Project (Since 2006)

3. Little Bloomsbury: An Annual Festival of Art, Music and Poetry

Since April 2006 Little Bloomsbury has established itself as an art festival with an annual audience of 300 -
500 viewers and workshop participants, and sponsorship from Cache Valley Visitors Bureau, FedEx Kinko’s,
Great Harvest Bread, Fred’s Flowers, and Seasons at the Riter Mansion. Unlike art galleries that are formal
and off limits to small children, Little Bloomsbury is a family-friendly event free and open to all ages.

Started three years ago as a housewarming party and held in a welcoming historical setting below Logan
Temple, the three-day event promotes diversity and community-mindedness through the universal media
of art and music. It creates a unique opportunity for citizens to mingle across socioeconomic, religious, and
cultural boundaries and participate in dialogues with established and up-and-coming artists whose work has
been selected for display at no cost. Demystifying art as “high brow” and inaccessible, it captures a diverse
audience with individuals who admittedly would otherwise not attend an art show in their entire lifetime.

Theme of 2010 Festival: Aimed at promoting self-reliance and organizing support for the launch of “Big
Issue of Utah” (see 2 above), the 2010 event will evolve around the theme “Shared Prosperity for the
Employment-Challenged”. The annual poster competition based on this theme will be announced shortly.

The Bloomsbury Origin: Little Bloomsbury was named after one of my favorite places, Bloomsbury of
London, which is known for its array of gardened squares and parks as well as academic institutions such
as University of London colleges, all but a stone’s throw from London School of Economics, my alma meter.
Most notably, Bloomsbury is known for its literary connections to the Bloomsbury Group, which included
writer Virginia Woolf, painters Roger Fry and Duncan Grant, and economist John Maynard Keynes.
