NUTRITION LABEL ASSIGNMENT


Directions: Compare the labels of two similar food products (e.g. two cereals, breads,
soups, yogurts, etc.) and attach picture of food labels. Determine which two products
are most nutritious by comparing/contrasting their Nutrition Facts Panels and ingredient
lists. Prior to starting this activity, first make your own assumption of the most nutritious
food product and fill out the beginning questions. Next, complete the chart and summary
questions #1-4. Use the “Nutrition Food Label” video from the Week 2 Module for help
along with Chapter 2 in the textbook.

Summary Questions:

1) After reviewing your data, identify which is most nutritious (or maybe they are of
similar quality .... good or bad).

The nutritious product is the Product 1 because it has no fat and less sugar.

2) Is answer #1 the same as you guessed before doing this activity? Same or different

It is the same.

3) Justify your answer for Question 1 in two to three sentences.

After evaluating the nutrition facts of both products, Product 1 has Vitamin A
which is good for our eyes and Vitamin D which is good for our bones. It also
has no fat and less sugar than product 2. Furthermore, the nutritional facts of
the product 2 is not based on its servings (its facts is based on 100 grams of
cereals and 30 grams of cereal plus 125ml full cream milk) which can affect the
nutritional value of the product.

4) In two to three sentences, give one suggestion for how to make the Nutrition Facts
Panel more useful or consumer friendly.

The Nutrition Facts and the Ingredients of the products may affect our health
and can be more useful if diseases or allergic reactions on the ingredients
listed may also be indicated so that the consumer with allergy on the certain
ingredient may became aware and will not able to consume the product.
Accordingly, the Nutritional Facts and Ingredients must be bigger or more
visible in the packaging of the product so that the consumer can notice its
nutritional values.
