Running head: THE ROLE OF SOCIAL MEDIA IN THE PARENT – CHILD RELATIONSHIP

ABSTRACT

Social media networks have become dynamic means for Filipinos’ daily

communications. Users rely on these platforms to keep in touch with family and friends,

gather information and share what is important to them. This qualitative study explores

how social media interferes with the relationship between children and their parents.

Ten senior high students from Congressional National high were interviewed. Social

media that are commonly used by the Filipino parents and their children are Facebook

and YouTube. The primary purpose of using these networks is for communication.

Social media like Facebook can affect the relationship among parents and their children

both positively and negatively. Proper management of social media should be employed

so it will lessen its risks to the relationship between children and their parents.
