QUESTION TAGS

In question tags we use the auxiliary verb :

Dalam question tags kita menggunakan kata kerja bantu:

Do / does Should Is /am/ are Can

Did Were / was Could Shall

Will might Have / has would

Must need dare had

Don’t / Shouldn’t Isn’t/ain’t/ Can’t


doesn’t aren’t
Didn’t Weren’t / Couldn’t Shan’t
wasn’t
Won’t Mightn’t Haven’t / Wouldn’t
hasn’t
Mustn’t Needn’t Daren’t Hadn’t

Normally we use a positive question tag with a negative sentence :

Maryadi won’t be late, Will he ?


They don’t like us, Do they ?
That isn’t Serli over there, Is it ?
Suharno doesn’t look very well today, Does he ?

You haven’t seen Irawati today, have you ?

Maryadi tidak akan terlambat,bukan ?

Mereka tidak menyukai kami,bukan /

Serli tidak di sana, bukan ?

Suharno kelihatan sangat tidak baik hari ini, bukan?

And Normally we use a negaitive question tag with a positive


sentence :

kalimat positif:

Rizal will be here soon, Won’t he ?

Ansarullah should pass his exam, shouldn’t he ?

Ansarullah harus lulus ujian itu, bukan?

Kami sangat sibuk, bukan ?

Notice the meaning of yes and no in answer to question tags :

Perhatikan arti ya dan tidak untuk menjawab question tags:

Contoh :

You’re not going to work today, are you ?

Yes, I am going

No, I’m not going

Anda tidak akan bekerja hari ini, bukan?


Ya, saya akan
Tidak, saya tidak akan

We often use a negative sentence + positive tag to ask for things or


information, or to ask someone to do something. at the end of the tag
in sentences like these :

Kita sering menggunakan kalimat negatif + tag positif untuk


meminta hal-hal atau informasi, atau meminta seseorang untuk
melakukan sesuatu. akhir tag dalam kalimat seperti ini:

You don’t know where Meryadi is, do you ?

Sorry, I’ve no idea

After Let’s ……….. the question tag is shall we ?

Contoh :

Let’s go out for a walk, shall we ?

Mari kita pergi keluar untuk berjalan-jalan, akan kita?

After the imperative ( do / don’t do something ) the tag is will you :

Setelah kalimat menyuruh / perintah, tag nya adalah will you

Contoh :

Open the door, will you ?

Don’t be late, will you ?

Notice that we say aren’t I ? (= am I not / ain’t )

Contoh :

I’m late, aren’t I ?

We play badminton every Sunday, don’t we ?

I am playing badminton now, aren’t I ?

Rizal played badminton yesterday, didn’t Rizal ?

I will play badminton tomorrow, won’t I ?

They were singing a song last night, weren’t they ?

negative sentence + positive tags

We don’t go to school everyday, do we ?

She doesn’t play tennis every week, does she ?

Dora isn’t writing a letter, is Dora ?

You are not singing a song, are you ?

Robi didn’t play football two days ago, did Robi ?

Metriansyah wasn’t cleaning the room yesterday, was Metriansyah ?

They weren’t wacthing tv last night, were they ?

She won’t play tennis next week, will she ?
