Introduction:
The idea behind developing Ultimate Trail Master (UTM) was to try stimulate
interest in 4x4'íng whilst also recognising those who are active & who
achieve more than the average Off Road user.
A by-product would be increasing interest in 4x4-related topics on this

Forum.
ANYONE who abides by the rules of the competition & participates in the
spirit in which the competition is run, is welcome to participate.
Disclaimer: I needed a website, a bank account & support in order to

launch UTM.
Attempts to garner support were largely unsuccessful, so I had to tap into
my existing infastructure.
I have therefore, with permission, used 4x4AG's site & account.
I'd like to thank Rudi Oost for the massive amount of help he has given me.

There are THREE challenges in which participants can undertake:

I. Dos Sete Diablos (The 7 Devils)
II. Cinco Extremos (5 Extreme Challenges)
III. Cinquenta Desafios (50 Trails Challenge)
You can enter anyone of them, you can even enter two, or all three.
Here are the details of each:
I. Dos Sete Diablos

(The Seven Devils Challenge)
The challenge involves completing 7 trails/obstacles within 24 months.

A competitor must successfully complete any 7 of the 10 listed
trails/obstacles:
# 1. WC - Atlantis Dunes (Under guidance of a FAC member)

# 2. Lesotho - Baboons Pass
# 3. FS - Moolman's Hoek's Horse Guided Trail
# 4. NW - Koos se klim at Moegatle ...up and down, not the detour up
# 5. NW - Briekmerk (Up & Rt at top only) @ Att Se Gat
# 6. LP - A Giyani River Trip (Molototsi, Klien Letaba, Letaba)
# 7. MP - HellsHoogte @ 3 Provinces
# 8. EC - Brakkeduine – The entire trail incl the figure 8 loop @ the end
# 9. NC - Lang Duin (at least 1/2 way *) @ Waterford
#10. NC/Namibia - Road to Hell Pass
A board will be erected at Lang Duin in due course to mark the point you
must reach on the dune.
Rules:
1. You must complete all 7 challenges within 24 months of completing the
1st one.
2. Only Challenges done after 1 January 2017 qualify.
3. You must submit proof (photos or video etc.) within 7 days of
completion.
4. Vehicle Specifications:
• No restrictions to vehicle mods, but the vehicle must be road legal,
licensed & registered.
• The vehicle must be owned by the competitor
• Different vehicles may be used, providing the competitor can prove they
owned the vehicle at the time.
• The vehicle must be driven to the challenge, not taken on a flatbed or
trailer or towed.
How it Works:
1. Complete the first of the challenges above.
2. Complete the online registration form on [www.4x4actiongroup.co.za,
click on Event Calendar.]
3. Pay the Registration Fee of R177.77 using your name, followed by DSD
(Dos Sete Diablos) as the reference.
4. Submit your evidence & documentation to
[madmannydefreitas@yebo.co.za (drop the mad)].
5. The competitor will then be sent a Competitor Number.
6. After each successive obstacle is successfully completed, proof must be
submitted, within 7 days.
7. Once all 7 are completed, it will be announced & a Certificate will be
issued.
Prizes:
All successful competitors (all those who successfully complete 7 of the
listed challenges within 24 months will receive a gel domed sticker & a
certificate “Conquistador Dos Sete Diablos”
The first competitor to qualify will be given a winch with a synthetic rope –
including fitment.

II. Cinco Extremos

(5 Extreme Challenges)
The Extreme challenge requires competitors to complete the 5 Extreme
challenges below:
# 1. NW - The Complete Briekmerk (Up, then Left & all the way down)
# 2. FS - Rhino Challenge @ Berakah (this will be an organised event)
# 3. NW - God Se Pad @ Moegatle (Guided only)
# 4. LP - Superman @ Rust De Winter (This is a guided Trail)
# 5. MP - Carnage Canyon
Rules:
1. You must complete all 5 challenges within 24 months of completing the
1st one.
2. Only Challenges done after 1 January 2017 qualify.
3. You must submit proof (photos or video etc.) within 7 days of
completion.

III. Cinquenta Desafios

(50 Trails Challenge)
The 50 Trails Challenge is simple, you must just have completed 50 Trails or
Overlanding trips, where you were the principle driver, at any time in your
lifetime.
Please Note: You can only list a place ONCE, no matter how many times
you have done it.
Between Hennops, De Wildt, Moegatle & Att Se Gat I have over 25 visits.
But those will only count as 4 'venues'.
WARNING: I will pick 3 or 4 of the 50 & ask you to prove you were there.
Inconclusively.
What Trails/Trips Qualify:

Any 4x4 Trail like; De Wildt, Hennops, Atlantis Dunes, Brakkeduine etc.
Any overlanding trip in Southern Africa; Richtersveld, Kalagadi, Zambia,
Namibia etc.
Note:The competitor must have been the principle driver, in his/her own
vehicle & accommodation must have been (largely) camping (Ground Tent,
TTT or RTT).
A trip to Botswana in a tour group using hired vehicles & staying in pre-
erected tented camps & cabins does not qualify.
How it Works:

2. Pay the Registration Fee of R50.00 using your name, followed by 50
(Cinquecento) as the reference.
3. Submit your evidence & documentation [madmannydefreitas@yebo.co.za
(drop the mad)].
5. Once 50 are completed, it will be announced & a Certificate will be

We'd have to set up a Rhino challenge, that's admin, trips to Berakah, calls
etc...
We may incur costs for designing the 3 logos.
We might have to set up days at Briekmerk & Koos se Klim to host

members from the colonies.
But the money is purely symbolic & on the amount of entrants I envisage
over two years, insignificant.

Perhaps time for some to dust of the old 4x4 and take it out for an
adventure...
Of course no-one has anything to prove here... its simply a challenge to

conquer... maybe, maybe not...

count?

Not being able to tow the tjiep with an a frame is going to make this a
whole lot more time consuming for me. But adds to the challenge will have
to see if I can make a plan. Might be up to 50 trails/ trips will start
counting.

event only. Think that this idea will really show who get their wheels dirty.
Think there is a chance for everyone to participate even overlanders.
I see this as fun so maybe this will encourage a few of us to put some dust

I stress this event is open to all.
If anyone is prepared to help me with:

* A Bank Account.

I'm more than happy to run this as a free-standing event.
I've probably given 12 hours of my time over the past few weeks & have
had many hours of assistence.
All I want is to turn around the decline in Off Road activity & to create some
fun.
The massive response shows that there are 'green shoots' of interest slowly
emerging.

Thank you thank you! I have done quite a bit more than on the list. There
is some "private trails" in the moolmanshoek area we have done. Then also
stuff in Lesotho. Driving in Moz in the rural areas were the most fun. All
bridges would be damaged after rains and repaired in extremely primitive
ways. There is quite a few trails I have done but cannot remember the
names.
So next would be the luderitz to walvis this year.

Hahahaha...;D forgot this.
This thread made me check up on what photos I still have, and think about
where we used to drive.
I can only get to around 30+ trails/mountain passes/dune driving etc with
proof (didn't have a camera prior).
Must still check if there are pic's from Nam, Bot's, Lesotho, and the farms,
private land, rivers and roads we used to drive on.
Guess it is time to re-visit some of the routs less traveled.

suggest that a list of entries be posted.
I wold think that their would be a good couple of guys that have done or
nearly done 50 trails , but i think we will be a hand full that will register to
take on the extreme challenge.
Think guys like Sakkie , DVR , Engel , Myself ...... Could be the only takers
, and arrangements would have to be made in order to facilitate the
challeges .

I wish to lodge a formal protest against Herman being awarded the first
prize.
According to his list he has only submitted 73 trails, whereas the name of
the challenge clearly states that 500 trails is a minimum requirement to
earn this title.
The challenge is obviously more "challenging" than previously thought.
It might take 20 years to complete at 25 trails per year....

around 400 trips that included 4x4 low range, and high speed gravel control
as well as lane changes and emergency maneuvers [moose test]. In moz it
was called miss the cyclist!

photo`s for evidence. Then there are still a lot I have done without a single

1. Schamach!!!!!!! Rooi Koos was in 'n klas van sy eie, en JP se skuins hang
2. Battle of the Dunes (Lifetime event!!)
3. Carnage Canyon - Kom Ronald..wanneer weer?
4. Lethaba River route. Nooit dieselfde sonder Willem
5. Swazi Erg Lekker route!!!!! (PUIK Castos, puik)
6. Henties to Kunene (dankie oom Jannie)
7. Inanda river route (daai een het ek voor gery)
8. Zevenfontein se eienaar wat die kinders op die sleepwa rondgery het was
spesiaal (en sy sinktank toilet)
9. Bass Lake nat in die nag (Jeep en GWagon gerol daai nag)
10. ATLANTIS!!!!!! saam met die Friday AVI malletjies....en daai spesiale
onnoembare een saam met Hein en die boys
Dan is daar natuurlik die klip in die oos Transvaal wat nog net twee mense
gery het, en een is nie meer met ons nie (RIP my groot maat)
Ek het so vinnig op 84 uitgekom wat ek kan onthou...van Walvis se Battle

of the Dunes tot by Umkumaas se rivier roete af tot by Ostrich in die suid
kaap.
Edit!!! (En nou dink ek skielik......ek maak die eienaars ryk!!!! en die petrol
maatskappye ook)!!!!

nou dat ek na Jurgen en Flip se lys kyk besef n mens hoeveel jy entlik
vergeet. Ek update my eie lysie en raak nou aan 100. Maar dit is iets wat
maar oor die jare bygekom het. Daar was ook n hele hoop roetes wat ek
gladnie die naam van kon onthou nie. Ek het nog baie min in KZN gedoen,
en ek weet daar is n klompie.

Sakkie daai roete waar daai klip is wat jy en Willie gery het is toe, nuwe
eienaars wat nie wil he daar moet op hul grond gery word nie. So daai klip
sal vir altyd net twee oorwinnaars he. Jy en Willie.
Carnage canyon , daai een moet jy nog klaar maak , hy jou elke keer
geknie halter met iets wat breek , as daar n paar mense is wat hom wil
gaan probeer dan maak ons so.

I have also realised how many destinations and trails are still on my bucket
list.
An unintended benefit of this thread is that it will also become a fantastic
reference point of where else to go for the next outing.
And some great ones should be revisited.
For example I see there is now a challenge to do the BEN 10 passes in the
Eastern Cape highlands in 7 days. This could be an excellent long weekend
excursion too.

Aikona, die eerste keer was Granny op die "strand" nadat ek en Willie die

Het maar min bewyse vir al die roetes, het in elk geval nie tyd om alles te
gaan soek nie, net die breinkrag wat nodig was om alles te onthou, was
uitputtend genoeg! ;D
Sakkie, Carnage Canyon is weer aan, die naweek van die 16/17 Junie, sal
lekker wees as jy dit kan maak!
Sien jy het ook Schamach in Nylstroom op, dit was 'n baie lekker roete!
Jammer die nuwe eienaars wou nie aangaan met die roete nie!

What Trails/Trips Qualify:

Any 4x4 Trail like; De Wildt, Hennops, Atlantis Dunes,
Brakkeduine etc.
Any overlanding trip in Southern Africa; Richtersveld,
Kalagadi, Zambia, Namibia etc.
Note:The competitor must have been the principle driver, in
his/her own vehicle & accommodation must have been
(largely) camping (Ground Tent, TTT or RTT).
A trip to Botswana in a tour group using hired vehicles &
staying in pre-erected tented camps & cabins does not
qualify.
How it Works:
1. Complete the online registration form on
[www.4x4actiongroup.co.za, click on Event Calendar]
2. Pay the Registration Fee of R50.00 using your name,
followed by 50 (Cinquecento) as the reference.
3. Submit your evidence & documentation
5. Once 50 are completed, it will be announced & a
Certificate will be issued.
Will track logs count as evidence?

Haha nee hy het 2 minder diff locks en is nou 30mm laer onder die pens na

ground clearance en ten minste 33 op jou tj het nie gaan jy sukkel in
Carnage , skade gaan jy beslis he , ek het op ons laaste aanslag n skok
breker afgery op n klip . En my jeep ry op 35s met 4.5 duim lift . Ek moet
by se dat ek Carnage al twee keer met my JK gery het en oorweeg om dalk
my TJ te vat, TJ darem ook nie standaart nie , 4.5 lift , 33s met lockers .
Kan dalk die pyp rook .
Dit gese , oortuig vir Reenen en kom kuier hier bo by ons, Ek het al vir
Reenen ontmoet by Honingklip so julle darem nie heeltemal vreemd nie en
ons is almal BROTHERS IN ARMS hier op die forum .

Reenen, praat met Ronald. Hy lei die "toer", en hy het voorwaardes en

minimum standaarde. Met baie goeie rede. Ek was twee keer saam. Eerste
keer tierod gebreek wat ons kon weld, en klaar maak. Tweede keer side
shaft minder as 500m in die trail in. Nou moet ek by sê...dit was net 'n
Isuzu.

Ek en Reenen het altwee rubber arms as dit by 4x4 kom, as ons mag sal
ons daar wees ;D
My softroadertjie het dam 33" bande, 2" lift en 2" body lift, ek kan seker
weer die spacers (2") ook terugsit maar dit ry baie ongemaklik so.
Nadat ek die spacers uitgehaal het is my pens clearance so 310mm wat
seker te laag gaan wees vir Carnage, plus die oop diffs.
Ek is nogals lus om die TJ te verkoop en 'n SWB Rubi aan te skaf, as ek dit
betyds doen ry ek self. :)

Daar het groot name met groot 4x4's al hard aarde toe gekom by Garnage
Canyon.
As ons onder begin was daar gewoonlik omtrend 20 voertuie en daar stop
net so 5 daar by die Beach. Tot die camera crew hardloop weg .
Ek sal maar met my plat Jeep met 33" op weer gaan probeer as ek
toegelaat word , daai Jeep van my is mos die groot pes.

I may be wrong and assuming things , and as the saying goes assuming
makes and ass out you and me , but since the mention of CARNAGE
CANYON all the possible trail masters have gone into hiding , this thread
has over 7000 views and has come to an abrupt stop .
I have entered two of the option in this tread , they easy 50 trails and the
CENQUE XTREMOS , think at this stage the only person to enter , no biggie
, and carnage comes as if on order so that we can tick it off , Jeep club is
going to Rust de winter so maybe a trip to superman , did KOOS SE KLIP
three weeks ago with the jeep club , Alex my witness that I completed it up
and down , carnage makes it 2 out of 5 , three to go , Manny put my name
on that winch ;D;D;D;D

te kom.
Miskien moet ek uitvind of ek iewers kan links voor of innie boot sit om dit
saam te beleef.
