Lesson Plan Title: Pollution Plan

Date: March 7th, 14th

Subject: Outdoor Education Grade: 10,11,12
Topic: Environmental Education
Essential Question: How does pollution impact you and what can you do to change that?

Materials:
Whatever the students need to create their visual
Computer lab for research

Stage 1- Desired Results – you may use student friendly language

What do they need to understand, know, and/or able to do?
-The extent to which pollution occurs in nature
-How much of what is thrown away can actually be recycled
-How to plan for a more eco-friendly community

Broad Areas of Learning:

Lifelong Learners – students will be able to construct their own knowledge while also being observant and
reflective. They will also engage in inquiry and collaboration.
Engaged Citizens – Students will be able to demonstrate and plan for contribution into making their
community a more sustainable and better place

Cross-Curricular Competencies:
Developing Social Responsibilities – Students will engage in making changes to the culture of the community
and the school by means of social action.

Outcome(s):
ES20-HP1: Investigate technologies and processes used for mitigating and managing resource use, waste
generation and pollution associated with growing human population.

PGP Goals:
1.4 a commitment to service and the capacity to be a reflective, lifelong learner and inquirer
Stage 2- Assessment

Assessment FOR Learning (formative) Assess the students during the learning to help determine next steps.

Checking their progress and understanding of the concept throughout the lesson

Assessment OF Learning (summative) Assess the students after learning to evaluate what they have learned.

Students will be required to submit a thorough plan for how to reduce the amount of waste within the school
and the community, including examples, resources, and challenges that may be faced. This will be graded
based on the student’s research and the understanding they gain and show of the impact of pollution.

Stage 3- Learning Plan

Motivational/Anticipatory Set (introducing topic while engaging the students)

At the end of one of the classes (March 6th) walking back from the golf course, students will be asked to
collect garbage along the way and place it in waste bags. When we get back to school, they will be able to see
just how much garbage is incorrectly thrown away and accumulates in our environment.

Main Procedures/Strategies:

As a research project, sin groups of 3-4, students will be asked to research and come up with a plan to make
the school and community more eco-friendly and anti-waste.
They are required to design their own plan and a way to implement the plan within the school and
community.
The project must include:
 Impact of pollution on society
 How humans contribute to the pollution issue
 Clear plan on steps/processes that can be used to change this within school and community
 Examples
 Resources available

Groups will have to create a visual representation of some sorts to share their findings and plan with the
class.

The introduction and start of the project will be completed on the 7th, with presentations happening on the
14th.
Closing of lesson:
Each of the groups will have to present their ideas and plan to the rest of the class.
