“A Queen Within delves into the idea of power-
girl queens throughout the ages... it channels
the message through really amazing iconic
fashion. We’ve never seen a fashion exhibition
quite like this!”

“Curated by Sofia Hedman and Serge Martynov

(who have designed exhibitions around the
world and are known for their fashionable eye),
the show features queen-inspired fashion,
photography, film and artwork – but it’s the
regal, avant-garde clothing that takes the
throne, with pieces from two dozen designers,
including Gucci, Maison Martin Margiela,
Viktor&Rolf, Iris Van Herpen and Alexander
McQueen.”

EXHIBITION
CONCEPT
A Queen Within investigates how storytelling
and symbols capture the imagination of
innovative fashion designers.

The exhibition artistically explores

eight personality types of a Queen, or
metaphorically, a woman: The Sage, Magician,
Enchantress, Explorer, Ruler, Mother Earth,
Heroine and Thespian.

Within every woman, there is a queen who
possesses the most idealized qualities of
contemporary womanhood: strength, beauty,
leadership, grace, authority and fear. The fashion

THEMES
The eight themes are based on interpretations
of Swiss psychoanalyst Carl Jung’s most
familiar archetypes.

Jung’s archetypes are derived from observing

recurring motives in the myths and fairy tales of
world literature.

A MUST-SEE
EXHIBITION
The story of each archetype – its powers, its
weaknesses, its significance – is articulated
through fashion, photography, film and
artwork. Symbols seen in the work of designers
and artists often carry fascinating nonverbal
information. These symbols are explored
throughout the exhibition.

HISTORICAL
SYMBOLS COME
ALIVE
In royal paintings and representations around
the world, such as the Rainbow Portrait of
Elizabeth I (c. 1600-1602), symbols including
eyes, ears, serpents and wings were used to
emphasise the queen’s presence and power.
These same symbols, and many more, appear
in the exhibition design as specially made
sculptures.

A QUEEN WITHIN
FROM CHESS TO
ART & FASHION
A Queen Within was first shown at the World
Chess Hall of Fame in St. Louis, Missouri
USA. In the game of chess, the queen is
considered the most powerful and often the
most unpredictable piece. She embodies
tradition whilst simultaneously redefining rules
established by a patriarchal system.

Though chess served as a starting point to

explore the symbology of the queen and
related archetypes, A Queen Within has since
been adapted to illustrate each archetype
from a more global perspective. Today, the
exhibition design is based on historical queen
symbols from around the world; from the
Byzantine Empire and Egypt to Russia, China
and Mesoamerica.
