PM Narendra Modi on Wednesday said that the government is following the path shown

by Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar. In a programme in New Delhi, PM also said that the

government is committed to work for the 'poorest of the poor'.

PM Modi's comments are significant as it comes couple of days after violent Dalit
protests rocked North India during Bharat Bandh leading to death of at least 10
people. Dr. Ambedkar is the greatest Dalit icon and is the author of India's
constitution. The opposition and Dalit organisations have accused the Modi
government of not doing enough after SC verdict on the SC/ST act, which diluted
certain provisions. The government though has denied the allegations, and have
filed a review petition in the Supreme Court. The apex court on Tuesdayrefused to
stay its verdict on the SC/ST act. It will hear the matter after 10 days. By
invoking Ambedkar, and saying that the government is committed to follow the path
shown by him, it is a political message by PM Modi to Dalit community ahead of
crucial elections.

The prime minister said his government had given Ambedkar his rightful place by
completing projects conceived in his memory. The 26, Alipur Road house where
Ambedkar died would be dedicated to the nation on April 13 on the eve of his birth
anniversary, Modi said.
