1. ABSTRACT
A timing belt is a cogged or toothed belt, also known as a synchronous belt, which meshes
with the grooves of a pulley in a synchronous belt drive. Timing belts maintain constant speed
during power transmission, and they do not slip.
Here in this project, we are going to design a timing belt for a multiple drive system, and analyse
its tooth shear strength, tension member tensile strength, flexibility, and various other factors.
The design includes the selection of pitch, calculation of belt width, and optimisation of all drive
data such as belt length, no. of teeth of pulleys, centre distance, power to be transmitted, etc.
In this minor project, all calculations will be done with the help of standard design formulae and
the results obtained will thence be compared to those obtained by the analysis software we are
going to use, i.e. ANSYS 12.0 ™.
2. INTRODUCTION
Timing belts are manufactured from abrasion resistant polyurethane and high tensile steel
tension members. The combination of these high specification materials gives the basis for the
highly accurate and strong polyurethane timing belts.
Polyurethane timing belts are of constant length, i.e. they are not subject to stretch thanks to their
steel tension members. Any elongation and pre-tension will follow Hooke’s law.
The manufacturing process used for timing belts produces closed tolerance belts which ensure the
even distribution of load during use and will allow the transmission of high torques. Due to high
accuracy of these drives they are also suitable for indexing positioning and conveying drives.

Timing belts are suitable for use in all industries where the synchronous transmission of angular
motion is required. They are therefore suitable for all types of power transmission indexing
positioning and conveying.

In this minor project, all calculations will be done with the help of standard design formulae
and the results obtained will thence be compared to those obtained by the analysis software we are
going to use, i.e. ANSYS 12.0 ™.
Various analysis will done, such as stress analysis, modal analysis, harmonic analysis, vibration
analysis, etc. on the modelled components made by a suitable 3D modelling package such as Pro-E
wildfire 4.0, and CATIA V5R19, and then they’ll be analysed in ANSYS 12.0.
