ASSIGNMENT 1
SEMESTER II
SESSION 20157/2018

COURSE NAME: ACOUSTIC AND NOISE CONTROL

COURSE CODE: BDC40803

PROGRAMME: 4BDD
BDC40803

Q1 (a) Previously, the intensity of acoustic was measured in pressure (Pa) unit. But, by
taken the Bell system, the acoustician used decibel (dB) for indicating the
pressure of sound.

Give two (2) reasons why the dB is implemented for indicating the pressure of
sound.
(8 marks)

(b) The information of sound in octave band (dB) is given in Table Q1.
• Noise level at a particular reception point from machine A
• Noise level at same reception point from machine B
• Attenuation produced by a particular type of noise enclosure
• The octave band A-weighting values
Calculate;
i. The overall noise levels for machines A and B, in both dB(A) and dB
(linear),
ii. The attenuation in dB(A) produced by the enclosure for the each machine

From the calculation above, explain the difference between the dB(A) and
dB(linear) values, and between the amount the attenuation provided in each
case.

Q2 In noise principle, there are four (4) different test METHODS OF MEASURING
sound power level. The methods are;

• free method
• sound intensity method
• reverberant method
• substitution method

(a) Provide brief explanation on the concept of free field, sound intensity and
reverberation method to your supervisor.
(15 marks)

(b) If the free field is the best method for measuring, classify the advantages of that
method by referring the equation given below

Lw = Lpavg + 10 log S or Lw = Lpavg + 20 log r + 8

Q3 For a room 8 m (length) x 6 m (width) x 4 m (height) , the reverberation time (RT)

using the Sabine equation and Eyring equation when the absorption coefficient for the
floor is 0.02, for the walls 0.04, and 0.1 for the ceiling is 3 s and 2.9 s, respectively.

(a) In order to reduce the RT in the room, the floor covered with carpet having α
value of 0.8 in a particular frequency band, the walls are lined with sound
absorbing material with an α value of 0.2, and the ceiling is covered with
acoustic tile with an α value of 0.3, in the same frequency band. Calculate the
reverberation time of room using Sabine equation and average absorption.
(5 marks)

(b) Calculate the RT and average absorption for a room which has double the
dimensions of the above room. i.e. 16 m long x 12 m wide x 8 m high, and the
sound absorption coefficients remain the same as originally.
(5 marks)

(c) By taking the room dimension from Q3(b), calculation RT and and average
absorption for the larger room when treated as before with α value 0.8 for the
floor, 0.2. for the walls, and 0.1 for the ceiling.
(5 marks)

(d) If the RT value using Eyring equation on Q3(a), Q3(b), and Q3(c) is 0.33 s, 5.9
s, and 0.66 s, respectively, explain one (4) lessons can you identified from this
sequence of problems by comparing between Sabine and Eyring equation.
