Hello everyone 

In Greek mythology a Gorgon is a monstrous feminine creature whose appearance would

turn anyone who laid eyes upon it to stone. Later there were three of them which are
Euryale, Sthenno, and lastly Medusa, the only one of them who was mortal. Artists
usually portrayed a Gorgon head with snake hair, and occasionally with a protruding
tongue and wings. In my opinion, the significance of Dickens naming the Chapter 9 in
Book 2 The Gorgon’s Head is because he wanted to say that Monsieur the Marquis
shares the same character with Medusa. As we know both Monsieur and Medusa reflects
the evilness and cruelty in their characters.

In my opinion, the passage generally describes that the life of the peasants were very
poor because they have to burden theirselves to pay all kinds of taxes that have been
provided by the aristocrats in order to live peacefully. Other than that, the peasants who
were lucky to get a job had to use all their earnings just to pay the taxes and this had
leave them without anything to live with. This shows that the aristocrats takes
advantage from the hardwork that have been done by the peasants for their own living.
Moreover, the peasants did not receive any benefits from all the taxes that they have to
pay to the aristocrats which then lead them to live in poverty. As a result, many of the
peasants died because of poverty.
