Junior/Senior Intern

Student:Chase Lane Observer: April Bartley Grade: 3

Date: 10/6/17 Time: 1:25 Subject: Math

1. Classroom Climate/Culture - Student Behavior

YES NO
Intern communicates and maintains standards for appropriate classroom behavior.
Intern anticipates and acts on potential classroom disruptions.
Intern maintains positive classroom climate.
Intern responds to student behaviors appropriately.
Comments: Praised students for showing appropriate behavior, used countdown to have students follow direction, waited on
students to show appropriate behavior after direction given, had student try again to follow direction to remind him and class
of expectations

2. Instruction - Instructional Time

Intern has materials, supplies, and equipment ready at the start of the lesson or activity.
Intern gets class started quickly.
Intern uses available time for learning and keeps students on task.
Comments: Powerpoint used to organize lesson, visuals of mosaics and information presented, had squares ready for
students to use to make mosaics, had pattern blocks ready and shape sheets ready for student use. Quickly got into lesson,
well-scaffolded and moved smoothly through parts of lesson- take fewer comments at the beginning to make more time for
drawing and coloring mosaics.

3. Instruction - Instructional Planning and Presentation

Intern establishes links with prior learning and experiences.
Intern arranges learning activities to support standards.
Intern appropriately uses a variety of teaching styles.
Comments: Began by reviewing shapes, nice job explaining mosaics and Gaudi, showed examples. Used student shape
packets to review 2D shape rules- wrote these on the board for student reference. Powerpoint helped to guide the lesson
and provide reference for mosaic activity. Modeled under the doc cam how to make mosaic. Asked students about their
chosen rule and how their mosaic demonstrated the rule as students worked. Nice integration of art and math.

4. Instruction - Instructional Monitoring

Intern circulates to check performance and monitor progress.
Intern varies level of questioning.
Intern ensures that all students have the opportunity to participate.
Comments: Circulated to groups during multiple parts of lessons, asked students questions to guide their thinking and
assess their understanding of 2D shapes and the task. Asked follow up questions to have students think about their
answers. All students had partners during turn and talk, worked in groups to determine rules, all worked on their mosaics

5. Impact on Student Learning - Facilitating Instruction

Intern establishes clear outcomes for learning.
Intern communicates learning outcomes to students.
Intern adjusts lesson based on student responses/ongoing assessment.
Intern connects learning outcomes to the NCSCOS.
Comments: Showed objectives of lesson to start, connected to prior learning, used what students said to help further
explain

6. Evaluation/Assessment - Instructional Feedback

Intern provides feedback on the correctness or incorrectness of in-class work to encourage student growth.
Intern affirms correct oral responses appropriately and moves on.
Intern provides sustaining feedback after an incorrect response by probing, repeating the question, giving a clue,
or allowing more time.
Comments: Praised student responses and their work, “Oh, I like that you…”. Provided time for students to think, asked
guiding questions when students got stuck, redirected students towards correct answer when needed
Strengths: Areas on which to focus:
Nice job having a student “try again” to come to the carpet Think about how you may respond if students call out-
quietly does this take your lesson off track? Will other students
Nice job having students show they are ready before want to talk out too? Take up too much time?- you can
beginning lesson praise those who are raising their hands as a reminder for
Began with a review of 2D shapes students have been others to follow
learning about Model a little further how to create a mosaic- draw a few
Excellent job having learning objectives displayed for shapes that follow your rule, show how they would draw
review before lesson their shapes and leave some space to create a mosaic,
Said, “Quietly without talking, look at this picture and think could have used more structure in creating mosaic- maybe
in your head about what you see.” Nice job stating your large shape to be filled in with mosaic could have been
expectations- gave all students an opportunity to share drawn on squares ahead of time and students could pick
about what they see from picture- gave wait time for one, all they would have to do is fill in the large shape with
students to respond- asked some guiding questions when shapes following their rule
students couldn’t think of what to share
Nice job listening in to Gabby’s pair as they turned and
talked about what they wonder about picture
Said, “Oh wait, hold on” to make sure all students were
listening before students shared
Used countdown for students to listen
Had students choose if they were A, B, or C partner to
determine who would speak first during turn and talk
Told student to move near you to help focus- did he move?
Great job explaining mosaic, used Powerpoint to show
Gaudi and explain about him(including vocabulary)
Asked, “What makes it pretty?” to help students think
deeper about the mosaics you shared
Nice job sharing multiple mosaic designs
Asked, “What do you notice about the shapes?” to help
guide students to think about the shapes in the mosaics as
students would have to do this when they make their own
mosaics
Nice job praising students for showing ready position
before continuing with lesson after students went back to
seats
Nice job showing 2 rules about 2D shapes to help students
think of rules with their groups
Had a student repeat your directions for coming up with
rules with group
Circulated to groups to help and listen to students as they
discussed 2D shape rules(first went to group of students
with one boy who was laying down to help refocus him)
Had students share rules that you could record on the
board
Asked class, “Is that true?” to get them to think if shared
rule was true
Asked guiding questions to help students think about rules
they shared and to use the correct vocabulary
Modeled writing rule for your mosaic on the back of a blank
square to start- emphasized picking one rule
Excellent job showing the picture of the apple as an
example of how the mosaic followed one rule
Great idea to have students write rule on the back, you
circulated to check their rules, before students started on
making their mosaics
Excellent job displaying directions for creating mosaic on
the board for students to reference
Reminded students to use only shapes that go with their
rule
Helped ELL understand directions and begin working
Took time to close your lesson by showing a student’s
mosaic and having class think of rule

Were the learning outcomes for the students met? YES NO

Did the intern’s/student teacher’s classroom management support the learning outcomes?
Yes! Chase managed the classroom with praise, waited on students to show appropriate behavior, used countdown. Think
about how you will respond to students who call out(which is great sharing, but may get lesson off track and take up time)
during lesson.
Was the Teaching Behavior Focus goal achieved?
Meeting the needs of every learner- Nice job going to Gabby to help her understand the directions for
the mosaic and get her started. Went quickly to students who needed extra support to ask guiding
questions and check work. Students could turn and talk and work in groups to help each other think
about questions asked. Nice job with ELL and students who need extra support.
