In May 2011, a tornado hit the town of Joplin in Missouri, USA. It was 1.6 kilometres wide and very
destructive. The tornado destroyed homes, restaurants and public buildings. There were over 1,000
injuries, and 161 people died. During the tornado, people tried to find refuge inside their homes or
buildings. Christopher Lucas was in his pizza restaurant with some workers at the time. There were
5 also 15 customers in the restaurant. They saw the tornado coming and Lucas opened an enormous
fridge and everyone went inside. He didn’t want to close the door of the fridge from the inside, so he
stood outside and held the door. The tornado lifted Lucas up and killed him, but his brave action saved
many lives.

After the tornado, Joplin needed about $3 billion to rebuild the town. The town immediately received
10 help from people all over the country. It was amazing. People collected clothes, household items and
equipment and they donated millions of dollars. They also donated their time to clean the town and
look after the people of Joplin. About 102,000 volunteers including engineers, businessmen, architects
and teachers arrived to help. They gave a total of 610,300 hours of their time! Generous people across
the country helped to save the town.

15 The tornado completely destroyed some of the neighbourhoods of Joplin. Many people didn’t have
anywhere to live, so the volunteers built new homes. Three years after the tornado, about 90% of the
storm victims had new houses. Architects designed these houses to be safe in a tornado. Many of them
had a storm shelter of concrete and steel, either inside the house or in the ground in the back garden.
Businesses were rebuilt, too. According to one Joplin businessman, the tornado affected 500
20 businesses and 450 of them survived. On top of that, 150 new businesses started in Joplin.

It is impossible for survivors of the tornado to forget their experience. However, people are going on
with their lives. Today, the town of Joplin is almost back to normal.
