Access to Radar Altimetry Data

 Different data provider (NOAA,

NASA, CNES, ESA) with
 Different data formats
 Different revisions
 Different content
 Updates only rare, upgrades almost
NIL
 Number of correction models is
limited (mostly to 2)
Access to Radar Altimetry Data

 Large computers are needed for

most applications
 Large data volumes per mission
 No easy access to some mission
data
  DJ for CD-ROM or DVD’s

 proprietary binary, netCDF
Basic Radar Altimetry Toolbox
 BRAT is a tool designed to use radar
altimetry data. It is able:
 to read all altimetry data from official data
centers, from ERS-1 and 2, Topex/Poseidon,
Geosat Follow-on, Jason-1, Envisat, Jason-2
and CryoSat, from Sensor Geophysical Data
Record to gridded merged data
 to do some processing and computations
 to visualize the results
 The Basic Radar Altimetry Toolbox is a
joint project between ESA and CNES.

Radar Altimeter Database System
 RADS is DEOS' effort
in establishing a
harmonized,
validated and cross-
calibrated sea level
data base from
satellite altimeter
data.
 The RADS data base
aims at users at both
expert level like
geoscientists and
entry level, like
advisory councils,
water management
authorities, teachers,
and students.

Access to Radar Altimetry Data

 Altimeter Database And

Processing System (ADS) was
developed
 As part of GFZ’s ESA support activities
(QLOPR products for ERS-1 & ERS-2)
 Improved as part of the D-PAC
activities of DLR
 As the scientific tool for GFZ’s internal
scientific work & basically provides
access to the GFZ expertise
ADS Central: Aim (1)
 Provide Radar Altimetry Data to users
in a consistent and simplified way (web
based)
 Provide basic processing capabilities to
users
 Provide state-of-the-art correction
models
 Provide upgrading and harmonization
 Allows for individual corrections (if you
provide us, or let us know)

ADS does …

 Stores your results for a limited

time
 Allows to perform processing chains
 Is open for suggestions to upgrade
and develop programs
 Tries to be up-to-date with data and
models
An Note on Privacy
 All Orders are logged by the system
 Results are stored for a few days at GFZ

BUT

 Nobody has the time and nerve to look,

what you are researching
 User help is provided, but may take a few
hours to days
